Is there a close alternative to Accurate 5744 powder?????
Shooting World powder named Cowboy
You most likely know that these days you need to be fortunate to score SR 4759 but it would do you well. A fellow recently posted his liking of Alliant 300 MP. It's about the same burn rate but not nearly the bulk that we enjoy with the fore mentioned powders.
If you can't find SR 4759, then IMR 4198 is close as to burning speed. When I haven't had 4759 in the past, I've used it with success.
Isn't SR4759 discontinued????
What is the difference between Accurate 5744 and XMR5744?????
Accurate 5744 is XMR 5744....one and the same.
That's what i thought.
Give Reloader 7 a shot.
closest to 5744 is 680/1680 or 4759 (faster burning)

I wouldn't mind trying 5744 but it's $38 a lb at my local Cabela's. Unique is now $28 and that's bad enough, since the last two pounds I bought were $16 and change each. Rel 7 is now $33 from the same source, and I remember seeing it for less than $25 last year. I'm glad we don't have any inflation in this country.
5744 here is $50
Most other powders are $38.
Prices here are crazy.
Reloder 7 or 4227 both work in the same pressure/velocity range as 5744. Your charge will vary. 308 Win, 190 gr boolit, 18-25gr Reloder 7, or 17-20gr 4227 shoot well as examples, What cartridge?
4227 is a sub for the discontinued 4759. Takes a few more grains to give the same velocity. I've been banging steel with it successfully and consistently in 3 bolt action military relics.
Shiloh
Using 5744 for 308 cast boolets.
Seems to be the best powder I've tried so far.
I'm trying I4198 this weekend.
5744 works very well in heavy for caliber loads. It burns very dirty when using light for caliber bullets. Lots of different powders are less expensive than 5744. I like 4227, 2400, Unique and RL7. And yes, Cabela's-Bass Pro is an expensive place to buy powder. Gp
Can't find any Shooters World Cowboy here.
Glad to hear this this is one of my favorite powders for my 150 grain loads for 30-30. I will look for some of those powders.
I've had 5744 and 4227 recommended as close substitutes for the SR4759 that was discontinued. Try the 4227 in place of the 5744, been working fine thus far with my 45-70 loads. Shiloh is right, it will take a couple more grains of 4227 powder for equivalent velocity.
