I sure could use a little help please.

I got bored today (You can allready feel the danger!)

A few days ago i was given @250 12cal 24gram steel trap cartridges. Usefull as tits on a boar, as i dont eat clay pidgeons.
So i got's to think and why not drop the shot and replace them with a slug?

A damaged Lee 575 Minié mould went in the mill, and long story short: It went to hell in a handbasket.

Not to be outdone i started on a swaging tool, so far so good:

A 450 grain .515" Lee slug as the lead source, and the way Old McDonald expedited the missus. With a wackwack here and a wackwack there, it became a fine littel slug:

So now i come to the help part!
I have never seen a roll crimp tool in my life, so i'm completly in the dark as to how the shells are going to be closed/sealed.

If any of you good folks could take some pics of a roll crimp tool i would be greatfull. Thus i can make my own and test the slugs.

search ballistic products or homemade roll crimp tool. If you can't find it, I am sure someone will be along shortly with the pictures.

BTW, great job on the slug, now that you've shown this, you have to give a range report.

What is unclear to me is the exact design of the "ribs"?
I suppose the "ribs" are curved to form/round the crimb, but i have some slight difficulty grabbing the maschining proces, thats all.

Hello Chicken Thief, first you make the basic design and then later on add a cross bar of 5/32 or better yet 3/16 diameter to help facilitate the roll crimping!

When we used to make our own slugs we just star crimped them on our Mec reloaders. Worked great.

I started out with a plastic roll crimper that didn't work very well. I later found out that it was intended for paper shells only. I then made my own roll crimper, which worked well, but wasn't worth the effort used to make it. More on that here - http://castboolits.gunloads.com/show...028#post959028

My advice is to buy a roll crimper from Ballistic Products or some similar place. http://www.ballisticproducts.com/12-...ctinfo/ROLL12/

I find that if I put a sheet of rubber under the shell before I spin the roll crimper down on top of it, that the shell is a lot less likely to spin on me.

If you do decide to make your own tool, you are going to need a dog bone tool with about a 3/32" radius on it. You need to cut a little lead angle on the throat of the roll crimper that ends about .005" below the OD of the shell & picks up the radius of the dog bone tool. After you get that shaped right, you then want to make a little roller & cross drill the tool to accept it. I find that if you skew the cross hole a little so that the roller pulls the shell in towards center it helps a lot.

Here's one I designed up from a BP sample. I can't recall if it's set up for CW or CCW rotation. The BP version has to be rotated in reverse with a hand drill motor to work. All that would need to be changed would be to put the cross pin on the other side of the centerline.

I see that BABore's drawing specifies O-1 tool steel. I made mine out of 6061 aluminum with a brass roller. It's been working fine so far. I've probably done a few hundred plastic shells with it.

you dont need to crimp at all , drip bee wax on top it will stick to plactic and still hold slug in place you also have lube as a freeby
oh one other thing you are putting it in shot cup_---- make sure the cup AND slug will go through the choke.
It would be best to not use a cup and use fiber

Does the beeswax hold the slug as firmly as a crimp?
I'm just wondering how it would work with slower powders to give proper ignition.

I have made a roll crimp tool as per BABore and it works perfect!
So here's the set-up.
1) Cut of star crimp
2) Empty shot and cut of shot cup
3) Insert slug and set in hull
4) Place over shot wad and crimp
Takes longer to write than to do!

Test shooting will commence after the weekend.

You will likely find that you need more hull length to roll down. What you have pictured won't give much resistance for good powder combustion. On the roll crimp tool, if you find that you mess up the overshot card too much you can reduce the center post height in the tool head. I made up a couple different styles for the slug loads I've done. The original was chewwing up the end of the slug til I cut the post back.

Your roll crimps look a little flat on top. If you make your pin concave in the middle, it should help to round things out.

Then again, if the shells shoot good as-is, then maybe a little flat on top is OK.

It's an interesting idea that you've come up with. Take a box of cheap trap loads ($5/25 shells) & turn them into slug loads ($5/5 shells). That's the kind of thing that puts a smile on my frugal face.
