Lube overload
I’ve used the search function here and elsewhere and still not sure of what to use. I’m casting 405 hollow base and 500 grain for my 1873 Springfield 45/70. I’ve been told to use 50% beeswax and 50% Crisco and pan lube them. Will this lube work ok with a smokeless load using H4198 powder or only for black powder?
The Wolf book shows a beeswax and olive oil mix.

I use bens red with h4195 and so far its worked just fine. I use a sizer to apply it but it is a liquid when hot and solid when cold so it would probably pan lube fine.

Animal and plant fats are for black powder. Their hydroscopic nature makes them the best for black powder. They keep the black powder fouling soft and easy to clean out.
A lube tailored for smokeless powder would he more be beneficial. Bens Red is pretty simple to make and will work well for pan lubing. I currently now use SL-68B which is a soap lube. Cant pan lube with it but you can fing lube with it.

Emmerrts (50% beeswax, 40% Crisco, 10% canola or jojoba oil) works well for black or smokeless. I've used it for both and had no problems.

If you are looking for a soft lube, then my 50-50 works very well in the 45-70 at a wide range of pressures and velocities.
If you are going to pan lube, my Carnauba Blue is a dream to pan lube with and works well in my Sharps 45-70 with 32" barrel.

+1 on the Ben's Red or Ben's Liquid Lube. You can even use them together and have the ultimate in lube protection. These are only for smokeless loading though. These are both very simple to make and have given me consistent shot to shot accuracy, even the cold bore shot.

I use 50/50 beeswax and olive oil in my 45-70 with smokeless powder, usually SR4759. I use the same lube on my muzzleloader bullets with black powder.

I use the improved version of emmerts 50% beeswax 40% unsalted Crisco, 5% canola olive or JoJoba oils ( these are old "steam" oils) and 5% anahydrous lanolin. WOrks good in BP loads and the lower velocity Smokless loads. If you want to buy a lube SPG works good here also.

I think I’m going to go with the beeswax olive oil mix and see how that works as well as giving powder coating a try.

G,day
I use Emmett’s for both black and smokeless, albeit both about 13to1400 FPS .above that velocity I use Alox diluted with Gum Turps, tumbled lubed.

For smokeless powder :
3 parts Beeswax
1 part Lithium Grease ( Lucas Red-N-Tacky )
Measurements are by weight
