Need to get a mold for .58 cal (1 in 48) barrel. Anybody have experience with Lee's REAL in .58 cal? IH
Yup, excellent shooter if it fits your barrel and nice and fast to cast as it's a solid base. Get the 2 holer :-)
I bought the Lee to use in a Zouave, but decided to try it in a Parker Hale P58 Naval pattern 2 band Enfield. These have a 48" twist with progressive depth grooves. The grooves are .013" deep at the breech. My concern was would they upset enough with lighter loads and those deep grooves?
The REAL's shot just fine over 40.0grs of 3Fg for a target load. For best results you want the bottom and middle band to be a bit snugger then just 'dropping in' the muzzle until stopped by the top engraving band.

I use the Lee REAL in my Euroarms 1861 Springfield musket, and it works great! I can shoot it all afternoon without cleaning the barrel, and when propelled by 70 grains of FFF it absolutely destroys water filled kitty litter jugs.
I've always liked the Lyman 575213 (505 grain) and 575213 OS (460 grain) and 60 grains of FFg for "military" loads, and the 57730 for serious hunting stuff.
With the right lube (I use rendered beef suet and pariffin in a 2:1 ratio) you can shoot all day without cleaning. I know that sounds like heresy, but I can only relay my personal experience.:drinks:
Thanks for the imput, guys. I'll probably try the REAL. I wont shoot these much and it's cheaper. IH
I have not tried the REAL's in 58 cal. but have used the Lee 500g HB Minie and find it shoot reasonably well.
Four of those Lyman 575213 molds on ebay <-- click-- right now. Might go pretty cheap.
Just won one.
Reported as new, $35.01 delivered. For a Lyman, I can live with that.
I didn't recognize anyone from the forum as a bidder, so I went for it. My screen name of PIWO appears in my eBay name as well, and I was hoping that if there was a regular poster here they would have the same.:Fire:
I was watching that one, but Uncle Sam just took all my disposible funds, so I didn't bid. Self employment for both wife and I is tough! My last name appears in my E bay tag, but I never mind being outbid, as I will only pay what it is worth to me, if you value it more than I, get to it. Dale:-D PS: that's not the one I was watching, it was a 54 cal.
I'm an admin on another board, and most guys there too won't knowingly bid against a fellow member. Sometimes you don't know, and some guys don't care. No real right or wrong answer, but I don't wanna run the price up on a mate as well. Gonna happen sooner or later I'm sure, but until it does........
I saw that .54 as well. I just bought a lee from fellow board member for .54, so I've about spent my shot! Bought water soluble oil last night, and two molds today.. been busy!
Just so you know, I'm dademoman over there - but rarely buy anything. :)

"I didn't recognize anyone from the forum as a bidder..."
Somewhere up top in the "home" or "members" page (can't find it again just now, but it's there somewhere), there is a list of members' eBay names vs. their "screen" name here. Useful to refer to if you want to check if any of us is bidding; if it is a mould or something similar, I will usually mention it here - I bid as "etagdoolf" (guess how I came up with THAT one?!?

piwo I was the $35.00 bid. Hope you enjoy "our" mold. Pat
I will enjoy it a little less knowing I was outbid someone on the forum. Can only tell you if I knew it was you, I would have abstained. This is one I really wanted vs just trying to cherry pick a good deal on something I didn't really want or need for future trade. I was prepared to go a bit higher, but not that much more at this time.
Once again, sorry it was you..........
Your right mate, there's another one there now i'll go for.My .58 is a Pattern61 and i'm hoping that a lighter minnie might make it a little more confortable to shoot over a match distance. Have fun Cheers Pat
