I need your thoughts abut a load for the 25-20 86gr Jacketed
My old Ideal 1950 manual lists 8.7 to 10.7 grains of IMR4227
the only other reference I have is what Lee included with the set of dies for that cartiridge
Lee lists 8.0 to 8.6 grains of IMR4227
that is a pretty large difference between Ideal manual and Lee
any thoughts?

One book is 70 years old, and could be intended for rifles only. I'd look for newer, more current data.
lee is usually on the low and safe side .I would use the ideal #s and work up a load
Old Hornaday lists 10.0 to 11.9 gr 4227 for 1700 to 2100 fps. This is the first printing of June, 1973.

I shot some at 9.5 grains alongside Winchester factory rounds and they printed the same at 50 yds and again at 100 yds

That's some info from 1993 using the old Remington 86 grain soft points.
4 1/2 grains of Unique turned out to be wonderfully accurate.

First thoughts are what gun are you shooting it in. I know very little of 25-20 rifles and I assume rifle here. But these cold be diverse actions. I am guessing it could be something strong like a winchester low or high gun versus something else. Essentially what is safe in one gun might not be safe in another. The only round that I ever fired was a factory smokeless jacketed round in a pump carbine that I think was a remington.
I am shooting a Savage 23B...strong bolt action.
I would try the higher pressure load. Fire and check the extraction and primer.Quote:

I use, all j-words, all IMR 4198 in my Winchester 1892 -
14 grs for 60gr Hornady
13.5 grs for 75gr Speer
13 grs for 85/7gr Remington
It handles them all very well, shoots good. From 1800fps with the heavy bullet to 2200 with the 60gr
But if there's a problem with all of this, your brass will start to start to wear out in a hurry with high end loads. And brass isn't so easy to come by.
I don't have a problem using these, but it's something to keep in mind
I use VV N340 in a 15-inch Contender barrel. With both a 75 and 86 grain jacketed bullet. It is an unpublished load and will not post it here. Both are very accurate out to 200 meters.
