Health hazards of fumes from modern powders?

I store all of my powders in one small room of the house. There are 30-40 one-pound canisters. Naturally, I keep the lids tightly sealed, and the temperature is never in excess of 75 degrees. However, occasionally I'll open a canister to check the amount remaining.

In spite of these storage conditions, I'm wondering if fumes might be a health hazard. A few of canisters are the older cardboard and metal containers, which probably do not seal as well as the modern plastic ones.

I'd be curious to know if workers in powder factories experience any symptoms from breathing the vapors. I know from experience that handling blasting dynamite on a regular basis can bring on wicked headaches.

The headaches are from the nitroglycerin, most likely entering the body from handling through the skin unless gloves are used or breathing within a small confined space without a proper mask. The workers most likely at the plants are wearing suits, masks, and gloves.

some people get headaches from shooting certain powders such as bulls-eye because of the nitro content dropping their blood pressure.

I have never heard anything about a problem from it just sitting there.

If you would like me to dispose of the old paper. cardboard and metal powder containers and powders I 'll pay freight.
If you decide to keep them yourself MSDS shows no hazards from proper storage.

Although it is a small amount, I also volunteer to possession of those hazmat materials and will gladly run the risk of exposure. Will also pay the freight it you pay the Hazmat fee.

If you drop a pound in a garbage can lid, light it up and inhale the fumes, it will not be good for you.

If your insurance provider would find out that you have 30-40 lbs of powder in your house then yes I would expect that headaches would occur.

I suggest you load some ammo instead of sniffing powder.

You mean for one brand/type powder right? Not total powder in general..



Have always been afraid to try and look that kinda thing up, primers too.

You can have someone who doesn't reload, for deniability sake, ask your local fire department what the municipal law is on home storage of smokeless powder. If you live in an organized community, I believe the answer will dismay you.

Thanks, Our local FD just recently went paid, so we are kinda unorganized :)

Unfortunately , not much with the Government shocks me any more.

You shamed me into looking at the Florida statutes . If I read correctly I can have 150 pounds for personal reloading with no mention of a number limit on primers..FS 552.241,2 a&b. That's my story and I'm sticking to it..
Not that I have any powder and primes to begin with ...:flute:

I suggest mental heath care by professionals.

Get help life is better than worries like that.

When I was still running a company out of my metal shop 9 years ago, the fire marshal did a walk thru and passed my reloading area and the powder locker [marked reworked stackon gun safe], made a comment about shooting but never said any thing about the powder storage. Was more concerned about up to date extinguishers and marked exits along with the paint and solvent storage.

Now that is a cure for my high blood pressure that I would enjoy. ..

When I was a little kid (8 or 9) my dad would come home from hunting and would
bring all the empty shot gun shells home and give them to me. I would sit for hours
sniffing the empty hulls. I loved the smell and still do. Catch myself still doing it from
time to time.

Snorting it as brown-brown is probably:2 drunk buddies: hazardous to your health, other than that I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm sure if the government made some lab mice smell one million cubic feet of gunpowder smoke that they would require a warning label from the surgeon general on powder cans and ammo. :kidding:
