I drove up the mountain to see the fine logging job going on. Well over a hundred loads of logs sitting on the decks ready to be hauled. Fire danger is now greatly reduced, hope they finish the section soon. Thought about burning a pile of old...

I'm betting it's a 50-70, which is a good thing in my opinion. I do have a friend who has converted many old movie guns with bad barrels to .50-70.

Try fitting the offending round base first into the headspace gage. That will help id where the problem is and how to fix it. I learned that doing 5.56 mil brass that apparently had been fired in a very generous chamber.

I usually loaded mine down to .45-70 levels. With Rugers, you may want to check if it was a model where the bolt locks when on safety, or not. I had a .338 WM that didn't, and found when in rough brushy terrain, the bolt could be pulled open...

Most experienced flintlock shooters will not use lead wrapped flint. Several makers will not warranty their locks if it is used. I am one builder who won't warranty a gun that the owner uses them.
