fredj338 replied to a thread Add tin? in Lead and Lead Alloys
^^THIS^^ I rarely add tin to an alloy for handgun bullets. Is mostly range scrap & maybe a bit of lino, which does have some tin, but as long as the mold is filling out, why waste money?

Linotype is readily available. Some vendors here sell WW in ingot form & are legit. I also have a bunch of pure lead & always looking for trades with guys having harder alloys or type metal.

It isnt zinc, melt temp is too low & zinc looks more like oatmeal. You have a mystery alloy but maybe have someone with a better tester test it? if it melts at 500deg, it could have a high tin content, like solder?

I have 60# uspfrb of pure sheet lead in 1# ingot. Would like to trade for lino or mono type, or hardball. I would go 2-1, lead for alloy. Thx

The adhesive is a nasty mess. I have about 200# sitting there as back up for the apocalypse. You can soak them 15min in gasoline, paint thinner or mineral spirits & the sticky tape wipes right off. Just make sure everything is dry before adding to...

fredj338 replied to a thread Overpressure signs? in Cast Boolits
Well 10% reduction is a bit enveloping. I have found mag primers don't affect vel/pressures much with faster powders at midrange. Slower powders though will show a greater vel thus pressures. So 10%, no. In say 9mm or 45acp using WST @ midrange...

Try it the other way; wetpack backed by water. Water can be quite "hard" on an expanding bullet. If a bullet frags in water it often expands perfectly in gel or wetpack.

The base drives the bullet, so any anomaly is going to affect accuracy. Dead flat is best, no base deformations is best.

WOnt likely work, the powder wont stick. You didnt say what dia but a harder bullet should be a bit bigger imo, like 0.357" for 9mm running hard. Resizing & filling the entire groove would help.

Yep, Eric has done several molds for me. Good guy, great work @ a fair price & quick turn around. yes you can buy a HP mold but you will only get what they want to sell you. A conv allows you to get the mold you want.

I cast soft with LHP, 20-1 in my 44mag cup points. Slow them down a bit to keep them from fragmenting. Even 50fps makes a diff. I run a modified Lyman Dev that casts 270gr cup points, no gc. Running 1250fps I get good expansion & 100% penetration...

^^THIS^^ Regardless of the bore dia, if the cyl throats are small, the bullet will be small. You need pin gages or inside dia microm but pushing a known bullet dia thru each will give you a rough idea. I load for several 44mags so settled on 0.431".

IT wouldnt have melted at 550deg, wouldnt pour at 650 either. If all the ingots are the same, I would be a buyer at that price.

Really not possible since it would take them 30sec or so to reload & fire. Barrel get hot enough to burn wood, sure, that only requires about 300-350deg? Lead melts at over 600 continuous deg.

No. What is likely is he is getting leading from the Alox failing. Then further screwing things up by chasing lead loads with jacketed. It doesn't clean the bbl but irons the lead into the micro pours of the bbl & unless you clean the jacket fouling...

Once you go over 4cav, the spru late becomes an issue. So in my 6cav, I pour the first two cavs & open, then the rear two & open. Do this until the mold gets up to temp. You can also heat on a hot plate to about 400deg & you should be able to get...

For me yes, saves time. Your really couldnt shake & bake just the bearing surface. You could setup a jig of some sort & spray just the bearing surface but why? I can do about 300 9mm bullets with 1tsp of powder shake & bake, pretty economical.

I pretty much only shoot cast/coated in all my handguns stuff. Shooting expensive jacketed seems a waste. High vel rifle, sure, jacketed works well but I shoot a lot less high vel rifle.
