    I don't know about the Chassepot but do have experience with a Dreyse needle rifle. For the Dreyse I've found that if the needle is too pointed/sharp it will occasionally pierce the musket caps that I generally use as a primer and not set them off....

    I've gotten real modern the past ten years or so I've added a small drop of dish soap to the very hot water I use to clean black powder fouling from my rifles and shotguns. The metal dries fast and then a light oiling and check it a day or so later....

    I've TIG welded some holes in receivers but I've also cleaned the holes and used loctite to hold plug screws then re-drilled and tapped. This works best if the holes can be moved to leave most of the plug screw intact. I've saved some stripped holes...
