It is a Gew 98. The bore looks very good, with sharp rifling right to the end. It is a long barreled rifle with the "roller coaster" rear sight. I will do a full slug, but i'm betting I get a similar #, and .292" is a long ways off the .284" of a...

Hello all, I have an old Mauser that a friend owns, and I am trying to determine what caliber it is. The receiver ring is stamped "Amberg 1918". The serial # is 1327, and the barrel matches the receiver. Now according to all I read online, this...

Its always worth testing, but I agree with the others you likely won't see much if any difference. I spent a few months dialing in my 6" K-38, and tried H&G, Lyman, Ideal, RCBS, and ended up using a LEE. The LEE made 6 versus 2, and shot every bit...

Bullseye was the original GI powder. It was the only one load for the 45ACP for the 230gr FMJ bullet. 5.0gr was of Bullseye was the standard for years and years. Not sure if or when they may have changed.

Some of the less expensive guns had cylinders that were basically bored straight through, no real "cylinder throat" to speak of, and it sounds like you may have one. With the chamber mouths that big, you may have better luck with a very soft...

I can't say I ever slugged any of my .38 S&W's, I just always sized to cylinder throat dimensions. I have shot .006" over bore in other guns with no ill effects, I personally don't get too wound up over it, especially with the soft alloys I usually...

As the fellows noted, 146 grains was pretty standard for .38 S&W. Occasionally an original mold shows up, or you get lucky and find an old Lyman or Ideal that will cast that fat, but most will be a bit on the small side. I have a custom cut LEE...

broken springs are pretty common on this type of gun, I've fiddled with old Iver Johnsons and H&Rs a bit, and they are similar. As far as the barrel cylinder gap, it was likely produced when black powder was the common propellant, and they left...

Not that it may matter to you, but if you haven't slugged it, you might want to. I bought a NIB P-1, and it slugs at .358", the loosest of any 9mm I ever checked. Even jacketed ammo of typical 9mm bullet diameter shot poorly. .359" cast shoots...

Light strikes could be a sign of long headspace. Same for the primer appearance. The primer backs out with the case forward than get reseated under pressure.
