I would be surprised if they don't go bang. The small amount of lube is somewhat of a surprise to me but I mostly shoot BP in 30" or 32" barrels. Thanks for the pics.

Larry I would greatly appreciated better pics of the lube and lube grooves on the bullet. When I was a kid I got to fire some original BP 45/70 cartridges but I have never pulled one apart. I do have a small collection but that is mostly fired...

Larry at one time this site had a lot of 45/70 manufacture dates. https://www.oldammo.com/january05.htm It still may but you will have to go thru it page by page. Easiest would be to e-mail them. From the pics it looks to be a solid head case...

Part of the joy of working on older guns is that the screw sizes used are not industrial standards since standards were not adopted until later. John is correct that the actual pitch is 35.5 so the 10-36 is close enough however 10-32 is not. The...

If my memory is correct it should be x12 - 28. If it's not that it might be 3/16-36NS since that is used in several places on the 1873's. I don't have an original 86. I did mount a tang sight on an original about 15 years ago but x12 - 28 is what...

Size and fit are most people look at when purchasing bits. Of equal importance is the material and heat treat. Some are very good and some are junk. Generally you get what you pay for. This is based on years of depaneling aircraft for...

Yup the RL 'dinosaur" didn't have the failure issues the Super has with the crank and link arms. I don't know if it's still the case but awhile back clean RL's were selling for more than the new Supers. The commercial loaders claimed they held up...

Need no, but a DRO on a lathe is way handier than a long travel indicator. Setting the shoulder depth when chambering is a piece of cake with a DRO. I use the tool post and cross slide to hold the reamer when chambering. Personally I find the DRO...
