When I first got to Lowry AFB in 1954 for Missile school, it was October, and winter was getting there. The barracks were old WWII barracks, with NO insulation! We had a coal-fired furnace, and we were on a roster for fire-guards, to make sure the...

Initially I used a piece of 1" dowel stock about a foot long - just happened to have it. Taped it to cut down on splinters. Moved up to a hammer handle. And for at least the last 20 years, been using this - OK, it looks like I've used it for AT...

I try to keep my pot FULL - when it drops down enough, another ingot goes in. I believe this keeps a more constant head of pressure, and it also increases the thermal inertia so the introduction of a (pre-warmed on the lip of the furnace) ingot...

Echo started a thread makarov boolits in Cast Boolits
I just purchased a CZ82 in 9mm Mak, and wonder what boolit molds are liked for that round. The factory FJ bullet weighs 93 grs, and I was thinking about polishing out a Lee 105-gr SWC 2-banger to .360, as needed by the Mak, but would like...

A lot of SWC feed problems come from the magazines, not so much the ramp. But the RN -374 (for example) will feed forever. I used MANY -460's when I became a civilian and Uncle Sugar wasn't providing my ammo any more, and had absolutely NO problems,...

Echo replied to a thread Small ingot mold? in Casting Equipment
Also, when I smelt, I usually use Lyman/RCBS type 4-cavity ingot molds, but flood them, making ~5-lb ingots. When I want to use them, with gloves on, I take one ingot in my left hand, flat side up, and another in my right hand, and swat the left one...

You might try water-cooling the ingot molds. Use an available cookie sheet, put a towel (doubled) in it, sop with water, and set the ingot molds on there. As you pour, they will sizzle, but the ingots will cool a lot faster and production will go up.

Echo replied to a thread Mould Tappers? in Casting Equipment
Kevin, in opposition to common practice, I don't tap the hinge area, I tap the side of the mold, actually the handle on the side. Just made sense to me, that a lateral swat with my light plastic mallet, would tend to knock the boolits AWAY from the...

I like to keep a full furnace, starting out full and adding (warmed) ingots as possible without overflowing. This keeps a fairly constant head of pressure, and little change in temperature due to the thermal inertia of 9 lbs @ 720* versus 1 lb @...
