If this is a 1886, I don't believe any chambered for 40-65 were proofed for smokeless powder. What rifle are you working with?

I am still wondering if anyone has tried full diameter paper patched bullets in one of those pistols? It seems like that would be the most effective on game, but the recoil may be prohibitive. If the muzzle is counterbored it may not shoot well. I...

Enough 2F black powder to give you 1/8" or so compression, drop tubed. A few grains of medium burning smokeless powder against the primer added if you don't want to have to wipe the bore. Make bullets out of 20:1 lead/tin, use good BP bullet lube....

I found the Russian lg. Rifle primers work best for me. Magnum ones open up the groups.

Some petroleum based lubes work, some don't. Just use a proven BP lube and you'll be fine. There are lots of them out there, some commercial and some homemade. Regular beeswax/alox is not a good choice. As for barrel cleaning, straight water works...

Johnboy, wonder what the 200 grain will fly speedwise with the heavy compressed 40 grains of Ol E 3Fg powder or 40 grains of Swiss 3Fg. Bet it would go wizzin along pretty close to your Clays load. Maybe not but the black powder recoil seems...

So Kirk ... did you stick with the 17.7 grains of SR 4759 with your new .406 loads? If so then the pure lead bumped up with this smokeless load?

Be careful what you wish for. The original 45 Colt load consisted of a 255 grain boolit loaded over 40 grains ... 40 grains ... of good fine sporting Black Powder. Now-a-days you can load 40 grains Ol E 2 or 3 Fg Black Powder under a 255 grain...

Thanks all. Sounds like my nickel collection should go towards the CZ 455. Sounds like my cup of tea. Thanks for the advice. Does the CZ have a one piece bolt or two piece like the ruger?

Sort of. It's not dangerous uncompressed in a cartridge, just inefficient and gives big velocity swings. Otherwise percussion Sharps rifles wouldn't work since there's no way to compress the charge in one of those.

I'd think you might have trouble pushing a 420 to 2400 in a Taylor. My own Taylor can do it with a 400 but it's really hard on the brass at that level. 2300 is much more realistic for normal use. It is super accurate and will shoot far, but I don't...

You can't do that because you don't know where the extractor cut is going to be until it's screwed into your particular action. Headspace also isn't the same on those actions.

Numrich barrels could be made by anybody and usually not so great. Serial number altered. That's enough to let you know it's a project rather than a rifle to buy and use.

This the correct answer. I've hit BP with a hammer to test the truth of that and it didn't go off; however the smokeless did pop!

Mine works great as long as the bullet is 433". Any smaller and it's terrible. And it does best with paper patched.

Keep it away from fire and sparks and it's no problem. It won't go off if you hit it with a hammer. It's not a primary explosive. It will, however, burn extremely fast if ignited when unconfined.

32-40 is quite a bit longer. It shouldn't chamber unless you trim it. Once that is done it should fireform just fine.

Since the neck is tapered, the length is determined by the bullet diameter. Figure out what size bullet you need and cut the case so it will accept that size. Oh, for cutting to length I used a machinable collet and cut it to hold the rim. Live...
