44Blam replied to a thread 45-70 need some advice in Leverguns
I like Varget... The varget recoil seems to be more of a heavy push as opposed to a snapping kick like in faster powders like 4198... The max loads of varget in the Lee book for 45-70 are compressed and they do hurt...

I've got a Marlin 1895 and have a mold that drops 500 grn boolits. I can load them into the magazine and I can chamber/fire them. BUT if I PC them, they are too big and will not chamber properly. I have only shot a few of these and I am very...

Ha! Fortunately, my new favourite gun is a 45-70, so it's gonna be a while before she takes that one. ;) And my other two favs are both .44 mag - I think those are safe. The .22 rifle is probably the first target... BUT she wants a .22...

So my birthday was today and about a week ago my wife (who has never shot a gun) said "for your birthday, I want to shoot a gun". So, I took her to a nice little range where there is a .22lr range with metal targets. She came in sweating with a...

21 grn of 296 seems pretty stout in a 310 grn boolit... But with boolits, there is usually a crimp groove and then a couple lube grooves, so I wouldn't move the crimp down to the lube grove... It probably won't chamber if you do.

When I lube, it is usually because I want to shoot some within a week and don't have time to PC them. BUT, I have a lube sizer and I run them through that and put them nose down in the box I am eventually going to load them into. Then when I load...

I've got an H012 Big Boy Steel in 44 Mag and I shoot near max W296 loads all the time. I find it a really reasonable load.

Whelp, I have to replace the front sight... At the lowest, the peep sight point of impact was about 10 inches high at 50 yards so I am going from the .570 factory sight to the Skinner .650 front sight. Will try that and then report back once I...

44Blam started a thread .224 cast? in Cast Boolits
Anyone cast for .224? And push them hard? I want to cast for a 5.56 chambered rifle and want to push them in the high 2000 fps range. Seems like a GC boolit that is PC'd might be able to do it?

I just bought a Skinner sight for my Henry Big Boy (44 mag steel). I have not yet sighted it in, but I installed it before removing the buckhorn sight and it looked to align with it, so I am sure hoping that I don't have to replace the front sight....

44Blam replied to a thread Recoil Difference in Cast Boolits
In that size boolit, if you use the starting or a little better load for a cast boolit, it is not a super heavy load. It'll kick, but it won't rattle your core. I think as long as your loading on the lower side the 400 grn boolit will be fine. ...

44Blam replied to a thread Marlin or Henry in Leverguns
My new Marlin is good - I bought it new about 6 months ago. It's an 1895 and it shoots straight and is very strong - I've run some stout rounds through it. The finish is OK. I put a new skinner sight on and sighted it in today and all my shots...

Range report: I took my Marlin 1895 to the range today and shot about 80 of those rounds. They do have a solid kick, but it is manageable. There are no pressure signs on the primers/cases and my rifle cleaned up pretty easily afterward. I...

It *should* add a little lubrication. It is simple to do and takes very little effort. But honestly, it's probably a like a blanky - just a little comfort.

They'll shoot. They have some thump to 'em on both sides for sure! At 56 grn, it's close to a full case but not a compressed charge. My Marlin 1895 has the 22" barrel so I *should* get pretty close to 2k fps, but I have no chrono so I'm just...

I have the Henry Big Boy steel in .44 mag and I love it. I shoot full power W296 rounds through it all day with no issue. With Marlins I have the 1895 45-70 and it is a strong gun. I've shot some stout rounds out of it. Both guns are accurate....
