Have heard that some knives made for the Indian trade were made of cheap casehardened iron, and it was customary to only sharpen one side of the blade , to preserve the hard steel skin on the other side.

Good buddy of mine was a mechanic for the RR for years, made a lot of knives and other stuff when the foreman wasn't around! He said some of the very old spikes good steel, and he would look for them to throw under his workbench, but the newer ones...

Wolfer, when I'm shooting at our CBA matches I use a stack of paper shims under the sight leaf to get the right elevation, for 200 yards the sight is set at 240 with .040 of paper shim under the leaf. I cut the paper into strips and staple together...

I just might try out my 1870 Husqvarna this weekend, but need to load a few rounds. Those old sporters might have killed plenty of moose in their heyday. If I get lucky I'll have to learn to post pictures. That "plinking load" probably would have...

Years ago a local gunsmith had a H&R Topper in Hornet, and told me it woudn't shoot his cast bullets until he shortened the barrel a couple of inches. He claimed it had a gain twist and he cut it down till it was "just right". Sounds like BS to...

+1 on the Rem .310 180RN, I have a Krag with a sewer pipe looking bore, and can shoot egg sized groups with a moderate load of IMR 4064. To bad I only have a half a box of them left. If I ever find some Hornady .311 RN I'll give them a try also.

WheelgunConvert, that is a corn husking hook, used to tear through the shuck so you could snap off the ear and throw it into the wagon. Mechanical corn pickers replaced hand picking in the late 40's, but before then millions of acres had to be...

Ineastern SD the jacks were plentiful until '80 or 81 and then just about disappeared, along with the flickertails. During my high school years spotlighting jacks was about a nightly event, and we killed hundreds a year. Now the Jackalopes were a...

MaryB, I remember some out of state pheasant hunters in our little hometown bar were talking about that incident, seems that one of them knew the victim. Weren't there more than one person shot?

For those that like Red Dot, you should try IMR Red , I've been using it in 30-06 and the Krag, and liked it enough to buy an 8 pounder. Still have my eye out for some UNEQUAL, but I really think that they dropped it before ANY was made, maybe...

A quick and easy vice can be made of scrap hardwood 2x4's , a bolt and nut, and screw one half to a wall stud and hinge the other at the bottom, and maybe use a small spring in between to hold the jaws apart. I use a set of carpenter's hand screws...
