John Taylor replied to a thread Marlin 189? huh in Leverguns
It's common to find head space problems on old lever guns. The pressure is usually not enough to stretch the brass but high enough to back the primer out. Had a 94 Win. come in that had .025" head space and the owner had been using it that way for...

John Taylor replied to a thread Marlin 1893 32-40 in Leverguns
Marlin barrels for smokeless are usually marked "Smokeless steel". Winchesters are marked Nickel steel which did not come out till 1895 for Winchester so all the rifle in 1894 were in 38-55 or 32-40 because they were waiting on the new barrels

John Taylor started a thread 1886 in Leverguns
Got a basket case 1886 Winchester in trade a few years back. The original barrel had been cut off so made a new octagon 30" barrel in 40-65. Got to the range for the first time this week to try it out. First shot on paper was 2" high and 2" to the...

My eye's are marginal at 100yds for most paper targets. I was at the range a few months back and someone had left one of the Shoot-n-see targets up on the 100 yard backer. I had no problem getting a good sight picture on that target. It was slightly...

Seems to me 16+1 lead/tin is approaching this hardness. At least, when I have cast 16+1, the weight is close to my 9+1 ww/lino. my 9+1 is estimated to be +- : 94.5% lead 4.5% Antimony 1% tin beltfed/arnie

I made some out of grade 8 bolts for my "M" die. I put a nut with an Allen lock screw on it that way I can use the same die body with several different expanders (also do the same for compression dies).

38-72 and 40-72 were the two black powder cartridges in the 1895. They didn't make very many as smokeless powder made them obsolete very soon after introduction. 7.62X54R Russian contract was the most produced caliber (300,000 or 70%), however not...
