This is a simple 'build' for an inexpensive big bore for hitting steel. Thompson Center Encore Stainless Frame Black Synthetic Furniture 27" Match Grade Machine, .45-70 Barrel, Shilen Blank, Stainless Modified 1903 Rear sight Lyman Front...

I'm feeling a little better about the smokeless loads right now. I bought some wads and a wad punch and may attempt some BH209 loads before going full black. How thick of a veggie wad are you using Big Mak? I was only able to find .125" felt...

I use H110 (fraternal twin of 296) in 300BLK with great consistency in supersonic loads. Low muzzle pressure at the end of the barrel makes it a (relatively) quiet load as well. For subs and cast boolits, not particularly great.

There have been several threads here detailing large straight wall cases with pistol burn rate powders causing ringing. It's also possible that I started to see these 'machine marks' on my cases after awhile with a different .45-70 barrel. ...

Yes, the double charge scenario is real. I weigh all of my final cartridges and since I know that they don't vary by more than 5gr. with fouling, and cast weight tolerances; it's easy to spot one that has been overcharged. I also don't use any...

I read through a few threads here yesterday and discovered that my once loved (and published) 13.7gr Unique load is unsuitable for .45-70 due to overwhelming reports of gradually rung chambers. In all large straight wall cases in fact, fast burning...

Really good stuff here everyone, I got the barrel put up and sighted in at 100yds on Saturday. I tried some Trail Boss, H4198, 5744 and RL7 loads through it. Not a whole lot of fouling in the action as you guys predicted and now I'm pretty excited...

True, I'll have to wait awhile for a progressive setup but I can adapt this to my little hand press. What kind of velocities were you getting with WC860 when you first observed a really clean burn and with what bullet weights? I just want to get an...

I seems likely that just the act of pouring the main charge will displace some of the kicker charge if the latter is small enough. This probably pushes the kicker off to the sides so that the main powder is technically ignited before the faster...

Yeah, I used to have a 20" Katahdin Barrel on mine. Great handling and a tack driver but it was in a 1:20. I just received my 27" .45-70 in 1:14 and am really curious as to how it shoots. If you are looking for a 1:14 for Encore, I would suggest...

I asked a similar question. I have a 15" .45-70 Encore Pistol Barrel in a 1-14" twist. Absolute dead accurate with the right loads. Tried both 405gr and 500gr loads with great results. Loads were with H4198, Varget, 5744, Unique and RL7. I got the...

Facebook has a great buying and selling page for Encores and Contenders. It's called TC Addicts and some of the most knowledgeable people are there buying, selling and assisting others with barrels and actions. shoe

Right, you don't want the two to mix in any way. Are you keeping the compression with a crimp or jamming the bullet into the lands? Is this with H50BMG? I am not asking for exact kicker weights.

Looking to try one of these slower ball powders for duplexing. I am familiar with the process but don't let want to commit to 6-10lbs of WC860. Does anyone know if I could replace replace WC860 with H50BMG to try some loads? Most of the powders I...

Right, I also have a 15" .45-70 Encore Pistol barrel with a 1-14 twist as well. They are picky with powder type otherwise they lead up and leave a lot of crud behind. RL7 leaves the cleanest bore with decent accuracy to me. I would try 4759 if it...

Perhaps I'm approaching this incorrectly. A lot of forum members cast for .308, 30-06 with 1-10 twists without reporting any severe leading. Since the heavier/longer/fatter (depending on the math you use) bullet has greater rotational inertia, lead...

What was accuracy like and what kind of bullet weights were your molds dropping? I was worried about excessive lead deposits in the barrel due to faster-than-usual twist if the lead was too soft. And yes, I was thinking 500-550gr at around...

Does anyone have some .458 535gr Postell Bullets I could purchase to try out in a rifle? I'm also looking for smooth sided cast bullets for paper patching. Any diameter between .440 and .451 is fine as long as I can reasonably paper patch these up...

I'm expecting a .45-70 Barrel from Match Grade Machine this week for my TC Encore. It's a 27" tube with ladder sights I modded myself (hoping to build a poor man's BPCR/silhouette rifle). They essentially take Shilen blanks and machine them to fit...
