I've never had the chance to fire one. I'd like to try it. I have a Ruger super blackhawk in 44 magnum with a 4 5/8" barrel. With full magnums it's a bit much. It's fine for a few cylinders full but I prefer lighter loads for everyday plinking...

Bazoo replied to a thread Wheel Weights in Lead and Lead Alloys
You cannot use them for a cap and ball. You need soft lead. Some of the stick on weights are soft. Some are not. It's easy to tell though. There is a sticky, I think in the lead sub category about sorting wheel weights and gives good information...

You will keep up just fine with a 2 cavity mould. Throwing money at it won't make you learn quicker. Round balls are hard to mess up because lead likes to be round. A smooth round shape has little issues with getting good fillout like a...

Hardness tester might be nice to have. I don't have one though. Keep your eyes peeled and you can get one reasonable here. My unscientific approach is to take a razor knife and cut a sliver off of both the suspect lead and either a wheel...

I would spray it well with break cleaner and scrub the cavities and mould face with a toothbrush. Then I take a pencil and color the tops of the blocks, the bottom of the sprue plate, and the alignment pins. Then I'd heat it on the lead and let it...

Sounds like you are off to a good start. You also need a source of lead. You about have the basics covered, but you can keep upgrading until its silly!

Neat idea! My hot plate sits on the table so I looked through the scrap pile and found a piece of square tubing the right size. I think its 2-1/2 inches, way heavier than necessary but it works.

I was looking for a 20# propane bottle for a member, Tazlaw, and rode down to the river where all of the flooding was last spring. I didn't find Tazlaw a bottle but there are several 250 and 500 size tanks laying in the woods, having broken loose...

I've cleaned an aluminum mould with a brass/bronze toothbrush. Extremely gently and with caution to work towards the cavity edge and not away from it. In this instance I did it cause I was stupid and had melted a nylon toothbrush in the cavity...

The 20 pound pot is big enough that if you want or need to ladle cast you can. The 10 pound pot is not large enough diameter to allow ladle casting even if the bottom pour mechanism is removed.

I'm not sure what I would do in this situation. But looking forward I would develop a routine to avoid this problem in the future. Only one powder on the bench at a time and full concentration.

I pour over the pot so I don't have much mess. I get lead all over the mould, at the end of casting I heat the mould on the lead again and wipe it clean of splatter with a rag.
