Congratulations! The 23 is a working-class rifle, but a good one. Original magazines are generally pretty expensive, when found, but Triple K made a replacement that at least fits and works. Grinding or filing the sharp corners off the bottom...

The jacket spring back may happen when bullet diameters are reduced, but unless you’re a benchrest competitor, it will likely have no effect on the shooting. I had a Remington Model 8 with a 0.260” groove diameter barrel that would throw the...

It’s a SAS “Mity-Mite” bullet swaging press. Enormous leverage for swaging, not enough ram travel for reloading. I think the Corbins carried it for a while after they bought out Ted Smith, and then it morphed into the Corbin “Silver” Press.

Ideal 457124. Their copy of the standard roundnose military boolit in the original Trapdoor rifle load, and the carbine load. Lyman still makes it.

A lot of the old “40-rod” benchrest shooters in Shooting and Fishing like Rabbeth and Chase just poured the powder into the (single) case that they used over and over. However, many of them said they “tapped the case” to settle the powder before...

Marble and Echo used to make broken shell extractors. These had the appropriate sized case head and rim with spring fingers which would go through the case neck and catch on the mouth of the case. Inserting it into the chamber, closing the bolt,...

Corbin offered a short length of metal tube with a hardened, domed washer with his .22 shell swaging die set. The tube fit over the press ram. The assembly traveled up and down with the press ram with the hole in the washer a close fit on the...

I have an accumulation of Lyman 45s for general use. I like the looks of them. If you are using the Ideal or the usual Alox-beeswax lubes, and only sizing a thousandth or two, they are fine. Dies and wrenches are easy to get, and switching out...

I have one in .45 caliber and one in .44. I think they are both the “TGBS” type. Workmanship and finish leave nothing to be desired. I put a hex nut on the adjustment screw of the .45 to make doubly sure the adjustment wouldn’t move. There is...

I’ve gotten into the habit of yanking back on the bolt handle when it’s forward, and checking the fit of the cam into its socket ahead of the handle. This with my reformed .240 cases; except for the short neck objection, there’s never been a...

There is indeed something strange about the workings of the Lee Straight-Pull. There is plenty of metal on the bottom of the bolt for lockup in the receiver, but the lockup is governed by a peculiar S-shaped spring down in the mechanism. When I...

A prominent advertiser in our area, determined to build a huge business empire in plumbing, heating and air conditioning, claims his technicians do their jobs "The Right Way; Not The Easy Way." I don't know if this procedure is The Right Way...
