I made a little die and plunger seater for a 310 tool by chambering the blank die with a .22LR chambering reamer. I can squeeze the Ideal 225438 gas check shanks into the mouths of those brass-plated steel FedArm primed cases, and pop the completed...

Some of the parts have the look of the dies and punches that used to come with the Herter’s “Nine-Ton” bullet swaging press. The owner might have fashioned a bunch of homemade dies to be able to make the calibers he wanted. (Or more precise...

If the front of your fired shells are a few thousandths larger in diameter than the rear, there might be a little chamber erosion ahead of where the short case mouth ends. If it is slight enough, you may be able to lap the chamber. Solder a few...

Southern Arizona. Had to get to this through my Attachments file. Called up the attached old thread, then went to “Cast Boolits Home” and here I was! Calling it up directly from my icon link in “Favorites” just got the “Server Down 24 Hours”...

You need fresh Evaporust to finish the rust removal. That was a lot of rust on that chain (or whatever). When the liquid turns brown or black, it is “spent.” I just finished out a pint of used Evaporust with a bunch of rusty bolts and Allen...

I have a .40-90 SS barrel for a Winchester that had very even small pits in both chamber and barrel. I clamped the muzzle in my lathe chuck, lined it up with the steady rest, took the tailstock off, and rotated the barrel in back gear, while...

Thanks, guys. The strap wrench was the key. Got the nut and the pulley off, and the motor out of there. Put the wheel puller on the hub at maximum tension and oiled the shaft. Maybe it’ll loosen by tomorrow.

Finally got my Grinder running after a few weeks of Lockdown devoted to cleaning and parts replacement. Only got a few grind sessions out of it before the motor started smoking. Tried to keep the run times down, but apparently it fried anyway; it...

I’ve rented several reamers and headspace gauges from CH-4D. The reamers were sharp, cut good chambers, and I’ve had no excess headspace problems from the chambers I’ve cut with them. I’m glad there are services like this available. Buying a...

My .38 was a barreled action when I found it. Got a mostly shaped and inletted stock from Shuttleworth for it and married a crescent buttplate onto it. The barrel is longer than my .22 and .32 RF #2s, the rifling is very good, but the chamber...

Were you bothered by that little poof of gas out the back? I have a cobbled-together #2 in .38RF that I shot one session (so far) with the Dixie rimfire adaptors, empty .22 shorts for primers, BP and the Ideal 37583 breech-seated. I was...

I’m not that great a competition shot (just proved it again this morning ), but I think my signal-to-noise ratio off the bench is good enough to draw conclusions from in load testing, anyway. Haven’t had much success with anything but...

The Cast Bullet Association has a giant compendium of cast boolit making and loading data “for beginner and expert.” No substitute for a basic loading manual, but once you’ve read one of those and want to experiment further, the CBA book is very...

Bent Ramrod replied to a thread The old gunsmith in Our Town
Good gunsmiths are actually cabinet makers and tool-and-die makers working for minimum wages. Hard to get a clientele, even at that, when the competition is these modern guns where the frames can be machined on a drill press and everything else is...

A friend had a Norwegian 20 gauge RB that I shot a few times. It functioned very well. Shot right to the sights at ~35-40 yds, but whipping that heavy barrel around to lead a flying bird would have been tough.

I believe there is a wildcat called the .40 Krag, which is the normal length Krag shell blown out straight. You could still use your .40-70 dies for sizing and seating; might need a taper crimp die if you want the boolit held tightly. JES might...
