They set the targets up and open the Quigley range for practice and sight-in the weekend before the match. You can shoot all week if you want. I notice that not too many people are shooting through the Wednesday before the match, people begin to...

Bent Ramrod replied to a thread Lyman gas checks in Gas Checks
It may be that Lyman was either very reluctant to pay a license fee to Hornady in order to use their patent, or just waited until it ran out and they could use it without paying. I remember, though, when Lyman started offering crimp-on checks,...

You ought to be able to replace the carrier with one from the Winchester 06 pump. It has a little fly on the front that allowed the 06 to feed Short, Long and Long Rifle cartridges. Probably wonít chamber a Long Rifle, and would probably keyhole...

You might warm the thing on a hot plate and pour one cavity, just to see what you get out of it. Iíve seen cast-iron grinding balls intended for large-scale trituration of copper ores to face-powder consistency. Out of the mould, they have a...

I always remove the BP from my #5 Ideal after a loading session, but occasionally I still find the drum is a little sticky in operation the next time. Deposits do form on the brass rotor, even without powder in the measure. Iíve taken to removing...

I donít shoot a .50, so my one request for clarification would be on the rifling twist you are choosing for your new Shiloh. The Ideal 515141 was, I believe, a copy of the original boolit for the original shallow twist rifles in .50-70. Faster...

That is true. The old sequence for straight wall cases was:full-length size (generally without decapping); decap/flare; and seat/crimp (if crimping was necessary). A lot of the old FLS dies had no threads at the top of the die; later ones...

A lot of the Lyman 44th loads seem kind of warm to me. (The 44th was the first load book i ever bought.) Mostly, I start with a Pacific Handbook, but I often to to Water’s Pet Loads If it’s a brand-new cartridge I’m unfamiliar with.

If you use paper patch boolits, itís no problem getting 90 gr of OE 1F into a Buffalo Arms .44-77 case. That, IMHO, should be plenty enough. Easier (if ďeasierĒ can be used in a severe oddball-case drought) to get or make cases, also.

I have one, that I try from time to time. It takes some wiggling, sometimes, to get the segments ordered for proper gripping of the shell rim. If it grabs the rim satisfactorily, it takes a lot of wiggling to remove the shell after the...

Bent Ramrod replied to a thread RB in air rifles? in AirGuns
Iíve tried Benjamin .177 and .22 lead shot in Benjamin and other air rifles. The groups are larger and the trajectories steeper than the same power levels with the normal pellets. Not hopeless, of course; you can still hit stuff. But no...

Itís likely, if the pictured rifle is the one you bought, that Rigby was only the retailer of your Ballard rifle. Typically, ďRigbyĒ refers to three or four raised flat sections on the top and sides (covered by the forend on bottom) of an...

9mm, .40 S&W, .223, 7.62x39. Conventional, whitebread, boring, blah. The shooters of these cartridges leave their empties until the firing line on our range looks like the opening scene in the movie Lord of War. One day I’m going to slip on...

I put (I think it was) a CVA flintlock pistol kit together once. The parts went together without a lot of fitting and it was a fun project. The gun looks good, if rather plain. I would think the Traditions kit would be as good or better. Iíve...

There is a skewing of the comparison that a certain amount of time puts into the equation. George Grotz referred to it in his books on antique furniture, hand, vs. machine made. The owners who rhapsodized about their hand-made Chippendales...

Many people who use smokeless in large blackpowder cartridges use something a little faster burning, like 5744. I would, though, expect some unburned granules from any reasonable-sized charge of smokeless suited to lead boolit velocities. There...
