I still chuckle at "skookum" LB! Yes, good crimps are mandatory. BTW, for the "poochy" loads the best wad I found has been the HCD 18 from BPI. If you need more height you can add a hard card under the wad base and the shot cups are a perfect fit...

My 2 sons are 3 years apart and #1 started at age 10 with 20 ga #3 - 2 3/4" loads. in 3 yrs he killed 6 bucks out of wooden stands I had made. #2 son started at age 10 and I decided that's what I would hunt with too. IIRC we killed 13 between us...

I have never bought into the 30" circle for starters and by my standards for buckshot even the improved patterns they achieved are crummy. A 12" circle more nearly reflects killing pattern. And of course anyone who shoots at deer at 80 much less...

Smoothbore or rifled for the 20? couple of good full bore options for rifled 20 gun. The .575 in shotcup works in 20 smoothbore.

Ok, I made 2 today amd remembered this. I worked up this recipe using this and that until I go it just right. Hope I don't leave anything out for 1 pie: 1) crust: make your own or store bought. If you use the prepared crust leave frozen until...

That needs patent protection. Somebody's gonna steal that Cap'n. If I had the skill I'd duplicate it for personal use. I know shotgun slugs are a small $ proposition for manufacturers, bit one would think somebody like Lee would market molds and...

We killed 'em the week before the full moon, already on the banks with the 80* weather we had. Everything gets filleted here now. Some of these were 2 lbs and better.

LB, I know that you know all this stuff, but different shotguns produce dramatically different results for whatever reasons with the same load. Phase of the moon for all I know, there just seems no logical explanation at times. In a post with...

Forget sizing the Lee I think. It will do better as it is in shotcup. try some with one 20 and some with one 20 and one 16 card. The lee 7/8 is very frontheavy and to my mind helps with accuracy. Like an arrow the tail will follow the heavy...

Nice job BT, I woulda had to leave that one for the yotes I'm afraid. You're the first to draw blood with Zlugs too. The opportunity hasn't presented itself for me when I was totin'em.

No they won't come off! There's going to be some setback at ignitionthat will tend to splay the wad a bit I would think. That will be interesting to see and a mild load may be just the ticket.

BMT, a 20 ga hard card fits perfectly in the bottom of the wads I use but is marginally smaller than the base of the 7/8 slug. Thus your printed wad would need a taper from the base of slug to bottom of wad that difference for a perfect fit. ...

The wad jams deeply into the slug without support under it. My results from rifled gun were not as good as with the Lyman 525. Look at the thread "custom wad for lee slug and see what A guy in the UK has done.....but he's not allowed rifled guns. ...

With 44 gr Steel in 3" Win hull w/Fed 209A velocity about 1700 fps and psi about 10,700 5 shot average. 35 gr 800x about 1550 fps and 11,300 average. Roll crimped. The first batch I sent were 40 Steel and 30 gr 800x, underpowered and revealed...

I can't answer that one for you. I have a cantilevered Hastings (not the bull barrel) barrel on my 870 and a buddy out of a Berretta rifled gun. With the grooves on the slug you are engraving only 30% bearing surface. Easy enough to slug the...

Many of us have thought so from time to time but doesn't prove out most times on paper. Lots of bulky powder like Steel to reach higher velocities often make it mandatory to good crimp height.
