Battis started a thread Gun show find in Muzzleloading.
There weren't many deals at the gun show in NH yesterday, especially when it came to cap and ball guns (antiques or repros). What they're asking for originals, in bad shape, is amazing. I did find this Paterson replica at a very low price (made in...

I used to make lube sticks out of the beeswax-paraffin lube. Plug the barrel, pour the lube from the other end, let it cool, push it out and bingo - lube sticks from which you can cut lube pills that exactly fit the chamber. These went over the...

I don't think the lead was engraved as much as the chamber's dimensions changed (unevenly), which is why the balls were harder to ram down due to the fouling. And if the balls were too small to begin with (.452), a path could be, might be, opened...

Der Gebirgsjager, you had a chain fire with Pyrodex? I always wondered if that could happen. I read that Colt sprinkled loose powder over the chamber mouths during the Army testing to prove that the guns were safe. He did not have one chain fire....

Pietta .44 cap and ball cylinder (no engraving). It fits my Pietta 1860 perfectly. I have not fired it and I'm not sure if it was ever used (I could be wrong). The nipples look good - I have not removed them (they seem tight). $40 shipped.

My theory is that the roundballs were too undersized, even if they shaved a ring. .452 balls would be fine for awhile, but when the fouling began, and they became harder to ram, the grit, fouling, **** - whatever - kept the undersized balls from...

Thanks. It is cold up here, but I have a nice woodstove 10 ft away. All of the small cabinet places around here are designers, not woodworkers. They'll design your kitchen, then order the cabinets from the factories. The place we went to today...

I looked for a small custom shop but found nothing. I even signed up on Home Advisor, but...nothing. We even checked a salvage company to see if anything could be refurbished, but found nothing. The cabinets we bought are made in TN (if I...

We found a local dealer that sold us higher quality cabinets for less than Lowes. They'll take 6 weeks to make, so I can look around for someone to install them, or plan to do it myself. Thanks for the suggestions and info.

I'm no fan of Lowes. I actually worked there for 3 months (part time, 20 hrs a week) a few years ago. The fact that I got hired to work in the plumbing dept. is kinda funny. "Yep, the cold faucet is on the right, hot on the left...I think." I...

We've...or I should say...she...has shopped around. Nothing she's looking at is in stock, and no particle board. The small places we've checked out order from factories and carry similar lines (or the same) as Lowes, and their prices are close, or...

The house was built in 1892. Nothing plumb, nothing level. I've done a lot of work on it myself - the problem would be where to store the cabinets until they're ready to be installed. A little more info on the installation - Lowes will charge...

Any suggestions for 8mm Lebel revolver bullets? I have brass and dies. The bore measures approx. .327". Graf sells a plated bullet in .330" but that seems too large in a plated bullet (plus, they won't ship to MA, even with a $40 minimum order)....

I removed the left grip to see how they were made. I'd say they're most likely made of Plexiglas. Each grip is made of three equally thick pieces held together by the pins. You could separate or loosen the top piece and slip a photo between the...

In the left grip, there's a square outline of something (white speckles) that is no longer there, probably a photo. I'm going to tell people that it was a photo of Churchill shaking Eisenhower's hand.

That is great info. I wonder if they were used on revolvers? You can definitely see the mainspring through the Plexiglas. I'll go give it another look. Thanks.

I put an 1892 8mm Lebel revolver on hold over the phone. The store rates it's condition as 75%. But they didn't mention that it has Lexan grips. At least it looks like Lexan. They're see-thru grips that were done by someone who knew what they...
