imho - perfect for the .40-65, less perfect for the .38-55, overkill for the .45-70 - i'd choose the mama bear cartridge. ;)

yep, lots depends on the wind. if i were fortunate to live and shoot out on the plains to mountains, then nothing less than a larger .44 or .45 caliber that's backed and packed with plenty of black powder would do. this is perhaps where the .40's...

i only load/shoot ppb's, so thinking to get rid of any greaser freebore and get the case mouth as close to the rifling, with maybe a 7* angle. it was a fleeting thought that this topic has put to rest as not realistic. as is, it's just fine and i...

can't go wrong with a roller. but the DGW pedi .40-65 roller has been on back order since last summer. think about that pedi sharps .40-65!

1hawkeye - something to think about, and in keeping with a cartridge a bit smaller than the .45-70, you may find interest in the pedersoli .40-65 silhouette sharps. i have one and was considering opening to a .45-70, but after loading and...

what works for me and yields the vast majority of BACO mould bullets of 422 and 528 grains within a 1 grain spread is the following, and i typically cast 100 bullets in a tad over an hour without rushing. monitor the 1:20 or 1:30 roto-metal alloy...

depends on more than a few things, but the kinda cartridge and bullet type would be good to know for starters. with greasers i'll start with 1:30, and then 1:20 for ppb's.

your hornady rifle dies are not pistol carbide, so yes, lube before working the brass. i lube the inside of the case mouth as well, particularly since i straight wall expand new brass to simulate fire forming. i like imperial wax. don't forget to...

plus, you can cram in a lot of powder into the .40-65 case if you paper patch. i can easily get in 68 grains, prolly 70 if need be, currently testing out 66.2 grains.

if the land bore is .450 and the groove bore is .458, AA5744 is one of the premier white devil powders for this cartridge. as to the bullet itself, depends on it's intended purpose and typical shooting distances, for which the bullet weight will...

i don't like or want to deal with grease cookies. for a light short distance (200yds) .45-70 load, i got around that by using a pair of .025" milk carton wads, and pair of 1/8" hard felt wads, and another pair of milk carton wads, all punched...

wondering if that's doable, particularly for a .40-70 s/s PPB chamber. i know the current chamber dimensions will be the crux of the matter.

the pedi '74 silhouette model is good one that's $1200 in .40-65 and $1650 in .45-70, from DGW. same exact gun, just different caliber/cartridge. i've been shooting the .40-65 with ppb's in its greaser chamber and it's far more accurate than i am....

yes, the pistol grip version. the "creedmoor" name has been slung about too often for various rifles, and too often it's just wrong.

for the .45-70 cartridge .... the c.sharps appears to be a low price with good value until you realize what's missing - double set triggers and pistol grip, just to name two items i'd consider important for a target rifle, not a hunting gun. ...

what will be the prime use of the rifle? that will define what accoutrements yer gonna need, and how much more money you'll need to complete the gun ready for shooting. for example, my last pedi sharps is the silhouette in .40-65 and i'll use it...
