Agreed. I suspect that the word "ball" was commonly used in those days in reference to any type of projectile, spherical or not. I noticed that the loading instructions for the Sharps carbine also mentioned "the ball". Not sure what to think...

1861 Manual of Arms - https://web.archive.org/web/20140530064404/http://ehistory.osu.edu/uscw/library/books/carbine.cfm No mention of wads or lube - the soldiers were training with cartridges (probably non-combustible cartridges, since they...

ofitg replied to a thread Sks in Military Rifles
Maybe it's just me, but the SKS seems to come to my shoulder and point more naturally than the AK or the AR.... I guess it depends on what you grew up on.... the safety is definitely located better than the AK's. Ten rounds on semi-auto is a nice...

I took another look at my 15k-ft Thommen - it provides a direct read-out of Station Pressure down to 22.5 in-Hg. That would only cover from sea level up to 7650 feet altitude (with a "standard atmosphere"); I believe the 21k-ft model is the same. ...

You might even try the "paper mache" material used in old-fashioned egg cartons. It punches out into little discs more easily than felt, and it absorbs a reasonable amount of lube. If you're already buying eggs, the material is "free".

John.k, for what it's worth, I have heard about one type of sugar-based blackpowder substitute which was actually available commercially (a few years ago in South Africa) - called Sannadex. ...

I wouldn't be surprised if your .30/95-gr slug at 2500 fps drilled right through body armor and then tumbled its way through the gelatin...... that could cause a devastating wound.

Acidia609, have you considered testing these zinc slugs' performance against body armor? This guy - The Chopping Block - has presented a few videos/trials involving hard and soft armor, but I don't believe he has tried cast zinc - ...
