...or it "could" be that PC'g protects the base/edges of the bare gas check shank, whereas ALOX'g leaves the base/shank exposed. Be that as it may, I find gas-checking no big deal since I have to pick the bullet up to size it anyway, and ALOx'g a...

Boundary value results as we say in the trade (I think I'll stick w/ GC & ALOX)

Then my apologies for the confusion. But today (rain willing) we'll see if PC protects the base on par w/ gas check. (I'm not concerned w/ body/shank, as ALOX has already proved itself there)

No, the issue in that question was centered an ALOX coated bullet. I've never had an unexpected failure up to/including mid 40's ksi -- as long as the base was protected with a gas check. We're going to see if -- all other things being equal --...

Threw some naked-based/ALOX'd Lee 200's into the oven this evening. If it stops raining, `will shoot them tomorrow PM. Film at Eleven..... FWIW: QuickLoad led me to Norma 200 and I've never looked back.

OK, I'll try it bare -- still shanked but no GC. (ALOX'd variant)

I also shoot the 358-200 to good effect, but gas-checked/ALOX'd. Is that a commercially available plain base variant, or did you ream the gc shank out? (BTW: How fast were you pushing it?)

Your problem is the Ruger cylinder throat(s). They are invariably way undersize, and need to be uniformly reamed out to a standard .4525" See...

mehavey replied to a thread Seasoning a bore in Cast Boolits
Someone's going to have to point to a source that later 19th-century barrels (save for canon) were made of cast iron. (I do know that mid 1800s Springfield's were supposedly Damascus/mandrel wrapped), but Bessemer's process opened things up after...

It's a mythological muzzle-loading term wherein newbies are told they don't have to clean the barrels after a shooting season if they use Brand-X] combo of olive oil and beeswax. Needless to say, the bore looks a badly-laid gravel pit covered...

Clean/sharp-edged/uniform base will buy you quite a bit of improvement. And I've never gone higher than Lyman #2 in anything from high-speed (2,500fps) 223, to larger (2,000 fps) 30 caliber.

IF you actually have a plain-base L358-200, then Lyman#2 w/ the barest/thinnest ALOX coating will still work out best (~2,000fps out of 16" using a gas check) But if you're actually shooting the Lee w/ the rebated gas-check shank naked/exposed...

See https://thefiringline.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6772223&postcount=57 The 358-200 was designed for use with a gas check -- which also serves to give you a clean/uniform base upon muzzle exit.) (Don't leave home w/o it) [smilie=s:

    1. How in the WORLD does one get a BHN35 out of a cast bullet ? (inquiring minds want to know) 2. One does not "crimp" mouth-headspacing auto-loaders. Case friction does it all. 3. One merely smooths out the mouth flair back to SAAMI 0.380"...
