This is true...~900 FPS at IMPACT and you have a dead critter with a big bore solid standard weight for caliber bullet like you describe. Under 50 yards there is little difference I think. But if you are serious about handgun hunting you are at...

You want to see some SWCs I've recovered from being caught in sand? The shoulder is still there, and after passing through 1/2" of plywood, too. I'd love to show some from gel, but I've never recovered a solid 44 bullet of any weight or velocity...

FYI Handloader #312 44 Special + P article has the following using Longshot and ~250 grain SWCs. I think Longshot may be be among the best powders available based on data for heavy 44 special loads that don't quite reach the territory of 2400 yet...

curioushooter started a thread Saeco #316 in Cast Boolits
Can anyone tell me about this design? Seems excellent to me for basically all 30 calibers. Lacking a schematic drawing of the bullet I am guessing it is a bore riding design forward of the crimp groove and it is clearly a gas check with 1.5-2:1...

I've read Paco's mod. It is the same idea but falls short of satisfactory IMO. To really do it right the receiver needs to be built up via welding (which nobody wants to do because the heat effected zone is near the chamber), then bored and tapped...

Most 30-30s use 1:10 twist, at least in my experience (which is admittedly with no "real" Winchesters). I think it is because they use the same barrels they do for .308/30-06 etc. I am almost certain this is the reason why Mossberg does it as the...

This is a very soft alloy. COWWs + 2% then mixed 50/50 should be 97.25% Pb, 1.25% Sn, 1.5% Sb. I'd be surprised if that had a BHN of 10. COWWs + 2% Sn should be 94.5% Pb, 2.5% Sn, 3% Sb. The alloy I've been using for basically all handgunning lately...

Rifle: 1:10 twist Mossberg 464 with 20" barrel. 311041 NOE clone. Lube will be Carnuba blue and Hornady Gas Check. Game: smallish Indiana whitetails probably inside 100 yards. I realize the fast twist may limit velocity where...

This seems like something worth testing. This stuff is comparably cheap to plywood. I know what that horse stall rubber costs...way more than I'd be willing to spend. Sand itself is hazardous to breath. Silicosis has taken more lungs...

To answer a few questions: 1) Of course the sand doesn't go back in the kids sandbox. 2) 2x8s are not thick enough for certain ammo. 2x10 is the way to go if you want 100% stoppage. 3) Any kind of rubber material that self-heals will cost...

I've found this to be true. It is even listed on alliant's website. For some reason it is not quite as accurate as the 7.5 of Unique even with the same bullets in the same gun the same day and time. Not wildly different. I did a test where I worked...

This is the second version of the sandbox trap that I've made, trying to make it smaller and lighter. This seems to work very nicely and is quite portable (bail out sand and put it in wheelbarrow). Can also be moved easily with basically any tractor...

Say no more... Tested this load personally in CZ527. Single digit shot to shot velocity variations. Turns 223 into 22 LR with basically that is super quiet and re-loadable.

This is absolutely true, and of especial concern with a lightweight for caliber round ball. The way I think of it is a hollowpoint acts like a parachute. It slows down the bullet much faster so it loses momentum faster and momentum is what...

What makes me think that is seeing the thing. Of course it's possible that some weird thing happened like I got very poor ignition and just happened to get massively lucky (very out of the ordinary) and hit the deer and the bullet was actually going...

SWCs and RNFPs designs like LFN, WFN are basically the same except for the shoulder and the size of the meplat. The difference in meplat is usually less than 15% in a given caliber, so I am not sure why anybody would expect radically different...
