    Sort brass by manufacturer/headstamp. Also, make sure that the rounds pass the “plunk” test. Some barrels have very short throats and require seating the bullets deeper. Some brands of brass are thicker than others.

    A .45Colt pistol shooting a 270gr SWC at 1,100fps will shoot through a treed 250lb bear according to Brian Pierce (HandLoader magazine). So, a 350gr bullet from a .45/70 at 1,500-2,000fps will do the job. My load for deer/pigs/bear is a RCBS...

    Also check out the CMP forum. There are a lot of M1A and Garand shooters there. Also, with the Garand, an adjustable gas port is available and properly adjusted allows use of any commercial ammo.

    My Carbine shoots cast better than ANY jacketed bullet. Best, strangely enough is the Lee 93gr RN .312”, powder coated and sized .311”. Over 12gr of #2400, shoots 4-5” at 50yds. 8-10” at 100. Even with Sierra 110gr Spt over 14.5gr of H110, it won’t...
