clodhopper replied to a thread 25 cal pellet question in AirGuns
Wally, seeing your are new to this forum, Working fast will be difficult if your pellets will not drop out of the mold. When cavities are cut the cutting tool leaves a tiny wire edge where the cavities meet. That little bit of metal makes the...

clodhopper replied to a thread Bleeding holes in Swaging
If you want an ogive in wall of the die, it should be placed far enough in the longest conceivable core would be contained inside the die before you start forming. Your core will be smaller diameter than the slug, the curve of the ogive will...

clodhopper replied to a thread Bleeding holes in Swaging
That die looks like it should have close fitting punches at both ends. Both ends need sealed enough to get enough pressure to force lead out of the bleed holes. The base punch (at lest in my vison) would be domed to produce a dished base. The...

Alfred has it nailed. Keeping the temp of the mold up is the key. Not so easy when you only pour a little dribble of lead in big blocks each cycle. Avoid drafts. Apply heat with a hot plate or other means. I sometimes use a piece of steel...

Almost 30 years ago, I bought a Savage 110 in .300 Win Mag - Cheap!! The reason it was cheap, was the owner had tried 3 different factory 180 grain loads, and couldn't get any better than 3" at 100 yards. I figured it was the shooter... I tried...

I bought a 10-22 for a loaner rifle, took it out to the range one nice afternoon to sight it in. The trigger sucked. Gritty, like dragging the trigger over three bumps to fire. Was shooting prone, and had a nice comfy matt on top a piece of...

Lead has a known melting temperature. Adding tin lowers the melting temperature. Melt some of the suspect wire and check the temp.

Tin makes lead tough. Sometimes your die will break. If your die is 7/8-14 be careful.

I had on last week, bought two bricks, fired one box, one dud. Could not believe it, good strike by the firing pin, second strike on the opposite side did not fire either.

Here's an old post. Still making them in a .223 die. They do not expand well. A .357 diameter hole serves just fine for my purposes.

Ashes won't "mix" into molten lead. As with all of the other carbon based items we put in (as Flux), they will end up on the top as dross.
