Thanks guys, I think the shooter learned one of many lessons yet to come! At one of the San Diego Schuetzen matches one of the very, very experienced shooters did a double load of his smokeless powder and the gun blew all to pieces. Fortunately he...

I went to a new (for me) range today and there were 14 of us shooting. A couple were fairly young and had very little muzzle loading experience. Many of the guys were using the pre-measured powder charges in little containers. It appears one guys...

I bought my octagon barrel tools from Gun Line up near L.A. They also make great checkering tools. Anyways with my chunk gun with 1 1/2 width they or no one else had a scraper set so I bought a set of cabinet scrapers from Rockler, traced the barrel...

For my 45 caliber slug guns I have 3 cast bullets. First is the 540 grain BASCO (Buffalo Arms) Creedmoor that just rides slightly on the bore diameter of all 4 of my slug guns. Two of them have Green Mountain barrels, one is a Pedersoli Gibbs and...

I would seriously doubt that is a field or hunting gun due to the stock and large barrel. The rifling will require a wet and dry patch after each shot. The fore stock is meant to be sitting on a rest or "log" or "table" for matches. In a private...

Since this rifle is a muzzle loader, the bullet will probably need to be bore diameter or as on the card 0.450 or maybe 0.451. The groove diameter is 0.457 which was what my BPCR guns were and I shot 0.458 diameter bullets BUT they were loaded from...

Probably someone made themselves a chunk gun. The large and flat fore stock is meant to sit on a log or other similar surface. Since there is 45-70 engraved on it the barrel might be from a conversion. The high cheek piece and rearward mounted scope...

One of our shooters has some heavy barreled rifles from an estate and I was very interested as they are heavy, very heavy but were weird calibers such as 36 or 44 or such. So I passed but I'll check to see if he still has them.

Cases, what are those????? Used to shoot black powder cartridge 45-70 rifles, 25 to 50 shots or so at a range visit. Now with muzzle loaders, 20 shots is a good day!

At our monthly match this past Sunday we had our usual 6 inch paper target at 25 yards but the steel was a bit different. Instead of the usual critters we had 2 inch discs at 25 yards, a 6 inch black chicken at 35 yards and a multi colored duck at...

Jim, I see you spend some time in AZ in the winter? If so let me know and if you want to some over to the San Diego area I'll let you shoot "Big Ollie" the chunk gun a bit and also a few of my others but the longest we can go is 300 yards.

I have a chunk gun made with a Douglas 50 caliber XX stainless barrel with 1 in 48 twist. The rifling is not very deeply cut, sort of like Pope did his. It was made 20 years ago for a fellow in WI and he used a Ron Long trigger and lock on it. I...

Here are the instructions for setting the trigger from the Pedersoli website, sorry it is a tad long. When improperly adjusted, a strong enough shock can cause the cocked hammer to be released and fire the gun. When properly adjusted, Pedersoli...

Okay here we go, how about the rounded rifling such as that by Colerain? Both my "long rifles" have barrels with the rounded rifling and they are quite amazing! They are the only rifle except for the one Roger Johnson made that have shot perfect...

I made a pair of "covers" for my long guns out of a sort of burlap material and then stuffed one of those gun socks inside for real protection. The way I did it was to measure the length of the gun and add about a foot. The material is generally 40...

With side lock percussion rifles the speed of the hammer hitting the percussion cap once the set trigger is touched is paramount. A fellow named Ron Long who lives or lived in Denver made some of the fastest ones ever. There is a new one called the...

Remember you can always shoot a long range rifle at a shorter distance easier that trying to shoot a short range rifle a long distance. At least easily........ My Pedersoli tang sight shoots to 50 yards with the adjustment all the way on the bottom....

I have one of the long range Pedersoli Gibbs and it was used. It came with their brass full length funnel/drop tube, 520 grain bullet mold, hand luber, hand sizer ( several dies) and a bullet starter. It has a 1 in 18 twist barrel with a slight...

Sorry I wasn't clearer with the 1 in 48 twist barrel. At 100 yards it will put 5 round balls or TC mini's in their own hole. Two weeks ago I was shooting with another fellow watching my hits as I was too lazy to mount my large scope. I would shoot...

I started shooting black powder cartridge 45-70 Sharps and an original Rolling Block and since our range only goes to 300 yards that was as far as I shot. They all 3 shot about 1 to 2 MOA and could have shot better if I was better. I switched over...

The post by Kens is what my mentor told me for round balls. The twist rate can always be faster since the object going down the barrel is a ball. If you start elongating what you are shooting then things get much more complicated. My 50 caliber...
