I am for sure enjoying the rifle I put together! It appears to be the most accurate shooter I have, maybe even better than my Pedersoli Gibbs which is better than good. I think Russ had the barrel and acc. made and picked it up at a Schuetzen match...

In April of last year I bought a 45 caliber 38 inch long muzzle loader barrel. It has a patent breech and is 1 1/2 across the flats. It also came with a false muzzle and bullet starter. It had the name "Russ Hooks" who is a very prominent Schuetzen...

I buy mine from Coonies' Explosives at: Phone, (575) 393-0166 Address. 512 E Lea St; Hobbs, New Mexico 88240. I buy by the case and now that I shoot muzzle loaders only a case (25#) lasts quite a while! They used to only take checks but not sure...

Shoot it! If you take it to a local black powder match the other shooters will be bowled over.

I noticed that when I first modified my non Pedersoli adapters and I took the correct size open end wrench and ground the outside of the opening to make the wrench very narrow. I also shortened the length slightly and the newly modified open end...

Thanks Bob, a local gunsmith has made several replacement hammers as the originals are oil quenched and never annealed so they are too brittle he told me. If the unlucky shooter can't find parts then that will be the way to go. John

I told the shooter about Pecatonica River as that is there I go my Allen box lock under hammer. Thanks everyone. John

Also not very serious except the gun can not be easily fired now. The shooter next to me had loaded his H&A 45 caliber under hammer with powder and ball to get ready to fire at a small steel rabbit when I heard him say "****, ****, ****.....". So I...

Out monthly match is this Sunday at the South Bay Rod and Gun Club (San Diego County, Dulzura) , range #2 starting at 9:00 AM. I imagine there are black powder shooters in Orange Co., Riverside Co., LA Co. and any other areas within driving...

Waksupi is correct in his last post and as I mentioned that is how I was taught to shoot. I didn't start muzzle loading until I was 66 or so and the arthritis has already set in and my blood circulation around my heart was getting worse all the time...

I agree with the Lee mold as my .490 mold makes .495 diameter pure lead balls. I called them about it and they sent me one a tad smaller that makes .490 size ones, for no cost.

I read through your original post again and it seems you are concerned with hunting and hitting the target such as a deer? If that is the case then the "hold time" and follow through as Waksupi mentioned above are going to be fast. If you are...

I have a custom made 50 caliber patched round ball target rifle made by Roger Johnson who does this and also uses the 209 primer adapter all the time. He mentioned that the vent helps control pressure with the shotgun primer. This seems to be true...

Our muzzle loader matches are all off hand and it took me a while to get somewhat proficient at it. I watched the shooters who did well to see what they did such as loads and how they hold the rifle. Since I have pretty bad arthritis it is pretty...

As I noted above, when I got my parts and such from Pecatonica River and talked with them for a bit on the telephone. I was told that the barrel screws into the Allen action which I used since it is adjustable for pull. I am not sure what the torque...

When I built up my under hammer I used a Green Mountain 1 in 18 45 caliber barrel. I shoot 540 grain grease groove bullets and so far have had excellent grouping out to 200 yards. I figure it can shoot much, much further but our range only goes to...
