.69 round balls achieve only about 850 fps with a 70 grain load of FFg in my muskets. A 500 grain ,45-70 slug will get about 1250 fps with the same load so will naturally have more recoil if the guns are the same weight.

The .458 WinMag usually has a 1 in 14" rifling twist. Heavy plain-base boolits need a slow start to shoot accurately. I have found that about 1250 fps is optimal for Lyman 457125, 500 grain slug. I consider my .458 nothing more than a .45-90 bolt...

While I have not tried it with 8700, I have had good results with Accurate 870 and WC860, very similar powders in .458 WinMag, .45-70. 11.7X51R Danish, and .40-65 Winchester all with cast boolits. By themselves these very slow powders do not produce...

Recent posts on another web forum claims that the fired 7.62X38 Nagant pistol case needs only shortening to perfectly fit the .310 Cadet chamber. Supposedly PPU is offering new brass for this size as well. This might be worth looking into for those...

After a shooting session with my .40-65 Browning BPCR, I usually shoot two or three smokeless powder loads using the same boolit and LBT "Blue" boolit lobe. This leaves the bore almost perfectly clean. A quick swab with Ed's Red and paying attention...

I have one myself. Great rifle for long range shooting with black powder loads once you figure out what works. For best results, check with the expert: texas mac. her is a link to his website: http://www.texas-mac.com/

curator replied to a thread Lesson learned in Military Rifles
The bright ring at the shoulder of the one that was loaded "too long" is an indication of it being bulged right there. Crimping when also seating bullets will sometimes cause this if a case is a bit too long. For best results crimp as a separate...

I did my .30-30 H&R Handi-rifle in .30-30 AI (40 degree shoulder) about 20 years ago. A little extra powder room can make for additional 150 fps at same pressure as factory loads. Brass life is much improved. In fact, I have reloaded many of these...
