They sure can be used to make tools, I used a piece of a Green Mountain octagon barrel to make a stock/forearm inletting tool. After shaping "teeth" in it on the lathe and heat treating to harden it then attaching a handle through the hole that had...

I am in agreement also, taking shots like that is bound to often result in wounded and lost animals! If the OP has not experienced failed shots then he is very likely more lucky than skillful, in either case taking shots such as those are nothing to...

We have historical data that addresses the maximum penetration. Before the gas chambers the German death camps would line the people up and shoot them. They used both rifles and handguns. Depending on size for the rifle the would shoot 7 or more....

As a hunting round for deer and hogs IMHO it is marginal. I have taken both deer and antelope with 22-250 and 220 Swift and with proper bullet selection and shot placement they both worked. The issue I have with the .224 Valkyrie is it's fast...

Unless I'm mistaken the 450 Marlin has slightly less case capacity than a 45/70 so getting a full charge equivalent to 45/70 might not be practical, however the reduction would be slight so performance should be very close. On a rifle I am...

I never had an issue. I have a long thin bluing tank type container that I can let stocks soak for a couple of days to dissolve glass bedding or remove oil from GI Stocks. You do get mild grain raising but no bleaching.
