I've cleaned an aluminum mould with a brass/bronze toothbrush. Extremely gently and with caution to work towards the cavity edge and not away from it. In this instance I did it cause I was stupid and had melted a nylon toothbrush in the cavity...

The 20 pound pot is big enough that if you want or need to ladle cast you can. The 10 pound pot is not large enough diameter to allow ladle casting even if the bottom pour mechanism is removed.

I pour over the pot so I don't have much mess. I get lead all over the mould, at the end of casting I heat the mould on the lead again and wipe it clean of splatter with a rag.

If you ain't mixed it yet and the jug has not been disturbed since dumping you might could cut the top of the jug off with a razor knife and skim the first 1/2" of powder off carefully. You might be able to see a difference too in good light. ...

I get the best results with about 1/2-3/4" free fall. Both in terms of fillout and not having inclusions caused by the oxidized film. Nothing wrong with shooting those bullets. You get too picky and you won't ever have bullets to shoot. ...

But doesn't the number markings still show??????? It seems to me that while that might fill the markings flush it would tend to highlight them due to the color difference rather than make them obscure, or am I missing something here???

I ended up shelving the gun because it leads up bad due to a tight spot in the barrel. It is gone back to Ruger currently. We'll see if they fix it or if it's on the chopping block.

Bazoo replied to a thread stirring? in Cast Boolits
Stirring by itself adds nothing. Fluxing however, combined with stirring is beneficial because it cleans any foreign matter out of the alloy. Oxidized alloy on top of the melt is reduced back in, and any debris is moved to the surface for...

Part of the reason I'm thinking to do something to the grips like grooves, is to index the gun in my hand. The extra grip is icing on the cake but I'm thinking the consistent feel will help my accuracy some.
