I inserted and epoxied a 16" 9mm barrel blank turned to fit the inside of the 12 gauge shotgun barrel on an old Iver Johnson frame and then cut the chamber for a 38-44 Bain & Davis. eventually, I will make an extractor for the smaller diamter case...

Thanks Blackwater. My concern in death is not getting to see my baby grow up, and leaving a sickly wife with no one to take care of her. Little Bazoo is 7 months old.

I've never encountered the old dies that shave lead, though I've heard of them. Is there any way to tell them apart? I have an old die that doesn't have the O ring like new ones do. I prefer it.

Are you saying you're looking at 2 dies for sale, one set designated as H I and one set designated just as sizing die for a Lyman 4500? There would be no difference other than the listing title.

From my experience I think a hotter temperature is better for fluxing. Seems like the oxides reduce back in easier. Also seems like the melt lets to of dirt/debris a little better.

The thirty caliber bullets you describe have a gas check shank. It's generally advisable to use a GC when the bullet in question is made for one. Using a GC design without the GC is a little more advanced. At rifle velocities GCs are generally...

Lees manual does not have data specific to his bullets sadly. The Lyman 4th has a few lee moulds in it's reference.

Welcome to the forum by the way! The lee push through sizers and alox works well. I use them for pistol bullets. The alox I mix with paste wax, to make it dry faster and not be tacky when dry. But I've used it straight and it works fine. ...

I have a Lee tumble lube 452-230- TC, 2 cavity old style mould I'd like to trade for the lee 2 cavity 452-230-2R mould. We each pay our own shipping. My mould was used when I got it here, seems to cast well and does .451 on the smallish...

I started with this romance of using a cast iron pot on the stove or a propane burner. I read about that in old books and magazine articles. Don't take that route, it's frustrating and tiresome. Lee 20 pound magnum melter, Lyman ladle...

Favorite? I'm still trying to figure that out. Something a bit heavier. I liked the Lyman 358429 but it was too long in magnum brass. However I had good luck with the 358156 out of a blackhawk and a marlin 1894c with 15 grains of 2400. ...

It's a pretty common practice to superglue checks on when using the old style ideal/Lyman non crimp on checks. I don't think firing would break the glue bond as it would be a compression load and not a shear load.

I use a cherry knocker about 12" long and 1 3/4" diameter. I've used other hardwoods like ash or birch. Seems like a tight grained wood holds up better.

My concern is always of the lube that's exposed inside the case. I imagine powder sticking to it like dirt on a dropped lollipop. Or it warming up and contaminating the powder. Or the pressure from firing blowing it off in the case somehow and...

I use the barrel or cylinder but I don't like it. I'm in the market for a chamber gage for all the calibers I load. It's so much of a pain to unload my 45 and check one, load back up, maybe or maybe not have to check another later. I've been...

The first and second edition are neat. But unless you have an obscure mould, vintage powder, or obsolete cartridge they are nearly useless for a modern caster. You learn about casting more from the third edition than any of the others.
