Multigunner replied to a thread I was given.... in Vintage Ammo
I was under the Impression that Custer's men used the .50-70 Trapdoors with the balky soft copper cases that often failed to eject when the gun got hot. IIRC his men had been using Spencer repeaters before that but the Army in its infinite wisdom...

Some German gunmakers used surplus Gew 88 actions to assemble hunting rifles intended for use with lower pressure BP loads. Handloading of most high pressure Smokeless cartridges had prove to be a problem due to wide manufacturing tolerances of...

I Like my SMLE and No.4, both are un commonly accurate, but only after much tuning, if I were to pick a rifle off a rack not having fired that particular rifle before I'd expect the Swede or any other quality made Mauser to be far more accurate than...

A local gunshop had dozens of these rifles in the refinishing room out back, was considering making an offer on one, then a fire broke out and burned the whole place to fine ashes. Never ran across any more examples. A side note. An old episode...

The side mounted flat spring with stud running through the action body wall as used on some sporting rifle conversions should work. I've seen these for cartridges as small as the .22 Hornet. A more neat commercial conversion used a flat spring with...

Would .40 S&W carbine barrels work? Don't know much about these but have noticed there were some made by various makers.

Just remembered an article on shortened LE rifles used by Chinese bicycle messengers. They took old beat up SMLE rifles, cut the barrel back to about 12-14 inches, then for luck soldered a half of a Chinese coin to the muzzle end for a crude front...

Reminds me of a 60's experiment by the U S Army. They converted some bolt action rifles to fire a .45 cartridge based on a shortened .458 Magnum case. They used .45/70 500 grain full metal jacket bullets (possibly old stock from an arsenal?) at...

I've found that actions with the bolt handle in front of the bridge are faster to manipulate for the first round when bringing the rifle up from waist level to the shoulder. Slower when cycling the action while shouldered.

The Wandering zero problem mainly affected No.5 rifles that had been used in high temperature environments. The rear receiver walls could flex and spread under high pressures of heat damaged propellants. According to one source they discovered the...

Afghanistan and some neighboring states bought commercially manufactured BSA SMLE rifles with markings and rear sight range numerals in their native language. If its an old Afghan contract SMLE even in relic condition it might have collector...
