I got a big heavy table from someone on craigslist for $15 that will make a perfect reloading bench. Laminated top over some MDF. Its got a ton of room, and is heavy as can be. Easily cleanable, and has some storage built in. On to the question at hand...

I have heard that mdf doesn't play nicely with finely threaded screws. What do you guys use to secure a press to MDF ? My thought presently is either some coarsely threaded lag bolts or a hex bolt with an unthreaded shank, with threading at the bottom and with a washer with a nut.

I'm sure someone here has had success with some combination of the above, I'd like to hear what has worked for you.

Up until now I have been strictly absorbing information here. Hopefully I might have something useful to contribute.

After slugging my 1895 Marlin 45-70, Ijumped in on a few group buys, but when I ordered my sizing die, I though I'd give this lee mold a shot. It came in an unfinished form, so I did a half-hearted lee-menting, opening up a few plugged vent lines, cleaning the top of the mold of burrs, and gave it a toothbrush scrub with some Ajax.

I heat cycled it 4-5 times, and cast with it. No real joy. Traditional ladle casting gave me fins everywhere; bullet nose, main cavity, around the HB pin. So I poured into it, no problems with fill out when the HB pin was hot, so I though I was on to something. I'm sure that violates a Cast Boolit commandment or two, but I'm not very dogmatic.

I would either get a good solid base and a pitted nose, or a good nose and a poorly filled out base. Got tired of making shoddy boolits, called it a day. Gave it a hot water/dish soap scrub and put it away.

Thinking about it in the mean time, I figured out that:

Keeping the HB pin hot meant that the sprue plate was too hot. I was getting pits in the nose ( its a nose pour mold). OK, slowed down the casting, and the mold cooled off too much along with the HB pin. Hmmm....

Gave it another shot today, refining as I went.

Final process:
Got a damp towel and a water bottle to keep it hydrated. Pour into tilted mold, turning it upright. Let the sprue harden, cool sprue plate on damp towel. Cut sprue, dump the bullet. With the mold upright, gently tap handle nut while closing to make sure everything lines up the same every time. Close sprue plate, repeat until pot is empty.

This gave me 175 boolits with both well-formed bases and clean noses.

BTW, I did try letting the sprue cool with the mold on a hot plate to keep the HB pin warm enough, but found this to be way too slow.

Hope this was clear enough, and that it might prove useful to someone else.

So here it is. I picked up what appeared to be a very nice Lyman #311291 HP mould ( used ) at a local gun shop for a great price . I have another just like it but is not as nice and I was going to upgrade. I get home, fire up the pot, preheat the mold on the hot plate and start casting. From start to finish over a good 50 pours I could not get a good fill in the mould with pucker marks varying from the nose to the driving bands depending on how I varied the pour,,, fast,,, slow,,, from the edge of the sprue hole to get a swirl,,, up high in a fast drip as you would get from a bottom pour,,, you name it. Next step was to clean the vent grooves and inside of the mould so clean you could eat off it and back to casting. No difference . [smilie=b: I then decided I would lap the mould and this is where it really got me. So I had the sprue cutter laid back and had a 7/16 nut laid over the top of the boolit cavity and carefully poured through the nut until I got a nice sprue bud on top of the nut and let it cool for a good minute before opening. Much to my surprise there before me was a somewhat frosty looking but absolutely perfect boolit with a steel nut attached too it :?: :?: :?: . Of note also was the nut had a smaller than normal hole in the center of say 5/32 in. vs. 1/4 in. and leads me to ask if you have seen anything like this before and what the cure may be ??? Oh, just so you know I switched to my old mould immeadiately after this and cast 100 perfect bullets with no issues at all.

I know it's been posted that the current Lee reloading dies are longer these days but not the bullet sizers as I have found out. The past solution was to put the lock nut on the bottom and in my case with the die reducing bushing was also to invert the die ring. Not pretty but worked or screw die all the way done foregoing the lock ring but ran into issues with ram travel considerably shortened. (I know, nothing says it has to have complete ram travel, just personal thing with me.)

I called Dave at CH4D.com and had his 3/4" ram extension/shell holder drilled through to allow primer drop and it works well!

It cost me $22.75 for the extension. Now any shellholder and the bullet stem pusher (for lack of better words describing it) works very well! I, being anal retentive, now have full ram travel, die does not wiggle, and it just snaps in and out with ease!

I talked to Ben at Hornady and their tool is approximately 1-1/2" long but it is hard to get them to drill through for primer disposal. I may buy one and take it to a machine shop but the 3/4" is working perfectly with my very old Lee decapping die.

You will notice where the lock ring is on the decapper, about halfway up the die body and perfect with the extension.

Side note: It's really not an issue especially on my 550 as toolheads are swapped in and out. Just a problem on my single stage and reaching up to the die to put the lock ring on the bottom is annoying. It may not be for everyone but it works for me and makes me happy.

take care,

Melting, smelting, schmelting, whichever term you prefer.

I've got a rig I put to good use some while back but haven't in the last two years. My new living situation forces me to really cut down on storage demands.

This is a tailgating fish fryer setup converted to lead melting; a strong steel stand with burner, cast iron pot with lid, a heat skirt made from aluminum which helps focus heat on the pot, a ladle and a stainless steel slotted spoon for pouring fluxing and skimming, and an ingot mold made from angle iron. If I missed anything, it's also yours when I dig it all out. I will also throw in a 1/2 full propane tank which I have no other use for (can't have gas grills in new housing area). I have melted and cast wheel weights in it several times with zero issues. The pot easily holds about 40 pounds half full and the setup was easy to use. These days I cast and shoot so little (3yo toddler duties) I can just throw a few scrounged WWs in my lee bottom pour and be fine.

I would like to sell or trade this in the DC metro area, since it's pretty big to ship economically and can't ship the tank. I'll get some pictures up tonight.

Asking $80 OBO for the lot. Will consider trades and don't mind driving to meet if we keep it under 40 miles or so. As to trades, I'm interested in things like: a 7" .45 1911 barrel, 1911 govt internal parts (have raw slide and frame), casting lead/tin, a 7-8 shot remington 870 tube extension, .300 blackout stuff, broomhandle mauser parts, a conversion cylinder for 1860 Pietta Colt (I'll kick in $$ or bring other trade goods), or other casting/shooting stuff make an offer.

Thanks!

Alex
