......on Monday. No way on this green earth that I'm getting anywhere near the mountains over Opening Weekend--I'll let the Angeleno and O.C. outdoorsmen return to their cubicle farms and job sites, and use the weekdays for hunting this season.

My "opener" will be spent in the company of the CZ Eurowhelen, with 270 grain castings on board. I will start in broken high country, with timber adjacent to brushlands at about 8,000 ft. Shots are short here--100 yards would be a real stretch. The muleys head for cover at sunup, and I'll be there waiting.

I guess opening day is a madhouse everywhere. I would avoid it, but it's only the first couple of days that we can take deer of either sex, so we head noth to avoid the idjuts.

Weird conditions this morning........cloud line was set at 5000 feet. Anyplace under that elevation was like pea soup, anything above had pretty high winds. Worked 3 spots about 3 hours each, not many hunters--but the prime areas were still pretty heavily hit. Saw one BIG doe right at sun-up......big enough to be a buck easily, but no horns--so no joy. Roads are a mess down low, will need the 4WD to give them a look.

I'll give it another go on Thursday, maybe the clouds will pull out and big deer won't be "outhouses in the fog" like Monday was. The area I'm considering might require the 6.5 x 55 and j-words, but the 9.3 will come along anyway.
