If the bore is good you have a great deal.

I would grab it if the bore has no rust. Mine was bought cheap but has light pitting. Works OK with conicals but very hard to load with PRB. Im probably going to get a 1 in 60 from Green Mountain as I like the PRB better.

I'm happy with my Thompson 54 cal. Renegade. Bought it because it was available in LH. Didn't care for the set trigger for cold weather hunting here in Michigan. Change it out with a single after market trigger by S&B as I recall.

I have bought a lot of Hawken and Renegade rifles making hot rods. The one your talking about would be a 175 to 200 tops in my area. Ron

I would put a good pen lite down the bore all the way to the breech. Many of these guns were fired and left dirty. The 50 cal Hawken is still being made and sells for a list price of $675 from special order Wally World. $250 to $300 is going price in my area for a pristine gun.

You can get some very good deals on TC Hawkens and Renegades on GunBroker.

I just picked up a TC Renegade percussion 50 cal fast twist (for heavy conicals) in very good condition for $135 shipped. I doesn't have as fancy hardware as the Hawken 50, but I bet it is the same barrel.

Flintlocks tend to command a premium. A nice TC flinter sells for $300 + on GunBroker.

I guess everybody nowadays is shooting super turbo powered inlines firing depleted uranium rocket pellets or something... hence lots of good deals on Grandpa guns.

Yeah, nobody wants a ML that won't shoot 200 yards anymore. What's next? Command detonated mines placed next to bait piles?

Actually it's not; the Hawken .50 has a barrel that runs 15/16" across the flats; the Renegades run 1" across the flats, as do the Hawken .54 barrels.

someone forgot to tell my .451" British style rifles that they can't shoot as far as inlines.

Actually, I have a .50 Renegade with 15/16" barrel. Just bought a .54 GM barrel for it. Had to do a bit of filing on the breech plug hook to get it to fit. Hadn't even shot it yet and a .32 GM barrel showed up on GB, so I bought that too.

Hello,

I would buy it and not look back.

Talk him down in price, though. And make sure the fly is present in the lock, especially if it has double set triggers.

T/C makes excellent muzzleloaders. I shoot a T/C .58 cal Big Boar and LOVE it. My friend shoots a T/C Hawken .50 cal and it is a nice shootin' gun. Both are very accurate with iron sights.

My TC New Englander .54 shoots well, and seems to knock down a deer every SEP.

Later models have a smooth bore for the first 2 inches or so to start projectiles more easily. I think that is a desirable feature. My much newer (25 or more years) .54 is very much more accurate than my earlier one.

I have TC Hawkins with two barrels. One is a 32" 54 cal 1 in 60 twist and the other is 24" 50 cal 1 in 24" slug barrel. Love that rifle! I think midways price is over $700. Like every one else if the barrel is rust free the price you mentioned is a very good price. I don't own an inline and would not have one, that does not mean that they don't have a purpose but why not just use a J word shooter. Most guys that use inlines use Jacketed boolits in a sabot anyway whats the difference. Oh! I know, it gives them another season to hunt. I'm probably going to catch a bunch of flak for this statement but I think the inlines are a waste of money for the intended purpose. IMHO. Some states have banned them for primitive hunts.

I have three T/C's, a Grey Hawk in .54, an Omega in .50 and a Hawken in .45. T/C makes excellent rifles. Like other posts have suggested, check the rifling. If the rifling is good, grab it. Can you take it to a gunsmith for his opinion?

First look at the serial number if it has a "K" in it then it was a kit gun. Not saying it is a bad gun but it was not put together by TC only.
Second check that bore out and if there is some rust see if you can get some off the price as it might be a worthless barrel and it might not be. Remember in the back of your head if it is a **** barrel to call TC and see if they will supply you with a new barrel. Yes they do have the best warranty in the business.
I have had at one time over 7 of the TC's and won't buy any other I had that good luck with them and 5 of them I bought used.
Best of luck and let us know how it shoots!!
