We've all had this conversation at one time or another in our shooting lives and there is always that gun you wish you kept. Looking back, what's the one gun you wish you never sold?

I once got rid of a JCP pump 12 ga. I sure don't wish I had it back.
Then there was a nameless 22 single shot, I don't miss it either.
I've kept all the rest, and miss only the time to shoot them. Their like children, that I wanted at the time, and wouldn't trade, now that their paid for.

Who-boy.........one ain't enough. I don't sell any guns anymore, learned my lesson on that over 20 years ago:

1. Ruger Redhawk 7.5" .44 Mag

2. Remingtion BDL 22-250

3. Winchester Model 70 pre-64 (didn't sell this one, LENT it to a "friend" who got caught poaching and I never got it back. This was also my lesson on "lending" firearms to friends, circa 1974..........)

.................and number three should probably be number ONE..........................

Awe no!..Not another one of these!

The one that haunts me the most was a 1909 Argentine Mauser in absolute new condition, but that's just the tip of the iceberg...

On second thought, I won't go into the rest. Too many to list and too painful to think about.

Don't regret any that I have given away. Some to nieces and nephews, children and grand children, kids that love to hunt and the parents didn't care, done and gone with no regrets! Biggest regret was a Model 65 Browning in 32-20, best turkey rifle I ever had. Distant secon was a pair of Winchester Model 12s, one in full and other in IC, and that's just because they were Model 12, never used them so out they went, now I do use the Ithaca Mag 10 that they were part of deal for so I guess that's a positive. Again a post that recalls fond memories and much emotion. 10 ga

Pre-64 Model 70 Varmint in .243 w/ Unertl 20x. Fired less than 100 times (about 90 by me).

Technically this was my dad's dream rifle in 1962, so it was his to sell…I just would have liked to have shot it more. But when he was laid off, it was one extravagance that he could liquidate.

I traded an M1 Carbine for my 1894C. At the time, money was a lot tighter than it is today. I would like to have the Carbine back, but I do enjoy the 1894C a lot more. I suppose if it really bothered me, I could buy another Carbine...

45 Cal. Flintlock Lancaster County Squirrel Rifle, My first rifle, I miss it dearly. I built it from an early kit from Dixie Gun Works when I was a boy and sold it in the 70s to get an AR15. Now the AR is shot out and I miss my real rifle.

I had a Remington 700 BDL in 7mm mag which was purchased to replace an identical rifle that was 'lost in the mail'.
It was a good one, but I decided I wanted a straight-combed stock.
So, I bought a semi-inletted blank and did my first job of restocking a rifle.

Initially, it was all hand done with inletting black, and the barrel was full-length bedded.
After that was complete (just so I knew how it was done) I glass bedded the receiver and barrel in separate stages. The barrel was free floated except for a two pound pressure point at the tip of the forarm.

The rifle was an honest MOA gun...and the stock actually fit me.

When my wife gave me a Browning 78 in 7mm mag for Father's Day, I put the Remington on the wall. A couple years later I traded it for a color TV set...our first.

I have always regretted that trade...beginning thirty minutes after I made it.

S&W model 28 4" barrel it had a large cylinder gap but shot great.

Also had a Remington 760 in 270 and a Ithaca model 500 stolen. Wish I could get them both back that 760 would shoot 3/8 inch 100 yard groups and the over under fit perfect and I rarely missed with it.

Lord, I hate this topic! How about a Ruger Single-Six, stainless, both cylinders, with a 9.5" barrel! Check with a Ruger collector to see how rare that one is.....or maybe the PPK/s in .22.....or maybe the H&R Officer's Model trapdoor......I think I'll go watch TV or something.

I have three, probably more but these are the top ones. A Marlin 39A 22 cal that I bought from my brother-in-law. A Fox double barrel in 20 ga with silver triggers. Of coarse I wouldn't have gotten it if I hadn't traded my 39A for it. The last one was a Bubbed Enfield 1917 but it had a really good Lyman site on it and was a real good shooter. I didn't realise at the time how much better it was than other guns or I wouldn't have gotten rid of it.

There's 3 that I can think of at the moment;

1. A Navy Arms 58Cal Buffalo Hunter. I had traded a $50.00 22 revolver for it!

2. A Ruger Single Six Convertible with both cylinders.

3. A Browning 25 Auto. Nice little pocket pistol.

I can't began to list them all but here are a few. Three really nice Lugers, one a Simson and Sons. They made 10,000 of them for the German Army after ww1before Hitler pulled the contract in 1932 because they were Jewish. I never saw another one . Three Colt single actions, one a cavalry issue. Two S&W model 39s. An excellent Winchester model 52b in standard weight. I have sold other 52s but they were heavy weights so I have no regrets with their passing. I could go on but you get the idea. I can't quit untill I mention the one that brings tears when I think of it. A Sharps Borchardt in military trim made for the South Carolina National Guard. It was in beautiful shape with an bore that shined like a mirror. There have been many more but I am getting depressed.

I wouldnt mind having that 700 mountain rifle in .270 with a straight 4x redfield on it....that i got for a small pile of 2x4's while working at the mill. There are several others too....like the 6" k-22 I traded for a single six when I was 9 because it looked more like a "cowboy gun". Stupid Kids. My dad suckered me into that one, and still wont give it back! Maybe its because he missed it after he gave it to me. who knows. At least I get it back when he dies. Watch it old man.

Can't say I've ever sold any that I regret selling...in fact, I've only SOLD one gun in my life, and I don't regret that one...a Jimminez Arms .380

Had a few stolen from my Mom's house a few years ago, and the one that I regret losing the most was frankly the least valuable...

An old long-barreled Stevens .22. The one that's supposed to be a semi-auto, but never fed...but it was a great tube-mag-fed bolt gun LOL

That old thing was like a gorilla...big, strong, and ugly. But when you threw it to a shoulder it hit every time. I dispatched many a feral dog, jackrabbit, or coyote with it at distances I couldn't even believe...it was just an instinct shooter.

I sure miss that old beater. Sure was a lot of fun.

I had a model 28 S&W that someone had the cylinder bored to .44 Special and a .44 Special barrel installed. It was nickel plated and a great gun. I carried it for a while when I was a deputy. I don't remember why I sold it, short of money no doubt.

Little off topic. How about the wrong gun you bought. I bought an Arminus 22rf/22mag INSTEAD OF a Ruger Single Six. My Dad convinced me the DA was a better idea. It took over 30 yrs to sell that pistol and buy a Ruger single six 22rf/22mag. I sold the Arminus for what i payed forit so i guess i did ok. It bothered me for years.........

A Remington-Rand Gov. Model .45 that I bought while working a summer job in Nebraska in 1963. No collector value since it had been reblued. Sold it for $50 when I graduated from college in 1964. I couldn't afford ammo to shoot it. I did use the $50 to buy a Ruger 10-22 that had just come out.

Not many of those in my history. Generally speaking if it performs well enough to be useful I kept it.

I've sold a few, and the few I've sold I do not miss at all. Perfect example was a really really nice Brazilian .410 side by side. Hand cut checkering, awesome walnut, nice rib. Sweet gun.

But the right barrel shot 2 feet high at 50 yards, and the left barrel shot 2 feet right. Sold it with full disclosure, advised the buyer to have his kid shoot it at clays until he had them nailed down tight. Got out of it what I had into it and never looked back.

What I miss are 2 rifles that I let a friend borrow, and he got caught shining a deer with them. And he lied, was too chicken to tell me so I could buy them back.

Rem 788 in .243 win with a good 4x scope.
Ruger .44mag carbine.

I miss them both. Don't miss him much.

Mod. 97 Winchester US marked
Ruger .243 with steel 3-9 Weaver
J.C Higgins .22(actually a Marlin 80)
Crescent 20 ga. double

Sold the 97 to pay the light bill. Tried to buy it back years later, no luck.
Sold the Ruger(serial number low 2000's) to put 4.88 gears in the Roadrunner. Bought it back in sad shape 24 years later for $550(guy wanted a new Remington and that was the price) and spent $300 having stock/metal/scope refurbed. Cost $160 originally.
The Ruger, JC Higgins and the Crescent were guns my Moms helped me buy - needed $$ after divorce. Later got the .22 back for twice what I sold it for. The guy with the 20 gauge woulda sold it back but he loaned it to a "friend" for his son to learn with - the friend, son, and gun moved out of state and the gun was not returned. I can ID it easily as I had 4" chopped off and the bead moved back "cause at 13 I thought that was perfect for quail . I still have the 4" of barrels !

I have an old Crescent 16 ga. double that I have never gotten around to fully fixing. It's missing the extractor, a spring for one of the hammers, the stock is cracked, hand guard missing, and the steel piece that attaches the hand guard to the barrel and keeps the gun together when you break it open is also missing. Parts are darn near nonexistent.

Also, the 16 ga. chambering is an odd size. It's been awhile so I don't remember which size.

I would say there are only two that regret seems to apply to... Ruger #3 in 223 and a Ruger security six with a six inch barrel. Both were sold for what I paid for them because we needed the money. Learned over the years that the money from such sales doesn’t do much for the final balance, but you almost never recover from the surrender of the item. Gone is gone.

S&W Model 686 S.S. .357Mag with adjustable front & rear sights for Silhouette shooting that I bought, IIRC in around '87/'88 for about, also as IIRC, about $300 or so. Sold it for roughly the same not too long after I bought it. I have my reasons for selling & it was not because I wanted to sell. I regret not trying to find another way to come up with the $$ as I likely could have & would still have that revolver.

There are a couple more that I miss, like a SS Ruger Speed Six .357, a Ruger MkII .22 & a Ruger Single Six .22/.22Mag revolver.

Of all though, it is that S&W 686 I think I miss the most. I really really liked that wheelgun...

What is this "selling a gun" that you speak of? I've only ever sold two. They were to a friend and family member so they had something for home protection. Don't regret either one.

Truthfully I have about two safes full that I should sell. I haven't, and most likely never will, shoot all of them. There are a few collectors pieces in there that I may regret selling. That's why I haven't sold any of them. Afraid their value might go up and I lose money. Pretty stupid to think this way because they have no value, beyond monetary, to me.

That's why I haven't sold any of them. Afraid their value might go up and I lose money. Pretty stupid to think this way because they have no value, beyond monetary, to me.

All those of which I spoke were either sold or traded to friends who envied & wanted them or given to a friend r relative. One can still have regrets about not having the firearm any more, even if the exchange was not to a stranger.

Not unlike that I have had to do the same with a couple of good dogs before as well, all given to friends due to moving to a place where I could not keep a dog in good faith as i would not be able to let it run & I will not leave a dog chained up/kenneled all day & night, so I find them good homes to live at since I cannot take them along with me, or spend time with them like they need.

I guess it is all in how one looks at things & what life throws at us. "Something to consider", I would say.

My biggest regret was a Ruger 22 target pistol made in the 200th year of American Liberty.

I have had a few that I passed on buying that I wish I had bought. One was a S&W "N" frame parts gun. I think it was originally a M-28 but it had a 44 special barrel and cylinder. It would have had no collector value but would have have made a great carry gun. Two others belonged to a friend, an excellent German Luger with matching numbers that a family member brought back from WW2 and a Remington 41 caliber derringer. We were at the Tulsa Gun Show together and I looked at both of them the night before in the motel room. Shoulda bought both of them!

--near mint Winchester 1894 made in 1897 sporting rifle with original marbles sight that I traded for a Colt Python that I sold to buy a 1994 Ford Mustang. Now that one hurts. I still don't like thinking about it.

One that looked just about like this one:

Mine was a bright nickel N frame and I do mean BRIGHT. I guess I am kinda like a raccoon- if its shiney, I love it! My only reconciliation is that I still have a no dash 586 and I will keep that one till they put me in a box. And a 686 that thinks it is a rifle. I hope that I have outgrown the urge to sell favorites, but as we all know, a gun trader's guns never have a permanent home. That is a pretty scarce 686, I would be sad too.

I sold a K98 Mauser with the death head and marked with a death camp name on the side in PERFECT condition other than the barrel was really worn(many years of shooting....things) and then being put back in the rack...
sold it to my bro in law for “collecting purposes” a couple of years later it was drilled and tapped and in a new stock with about 5 inches of barrel chopped off... that’s when i disowned him..

I'm not sure I'd want to own that particular rifle, but if that had been my brother, I'd probably have killed him...

I agree with dragon, the only firearm I have let go so far was a .338win mag m70 with a safari stock and a mediocre scope. I traded it for a welder that got me started on an education that has provided when I needed it and given me a skill that I still love to use.

pre 64 Win 70 in 300 H&H. Bought new by a Canadian guy who used it to put meat on the table for decades. Finally decided to get rid of it and sold it to me for $300. Used but well taken care of as are all rifles used to feed a family during lean times.

A Ruger #1 45/70. It had fantastic wood, the best I had ever seen on a #1. I sold it about 18 years ago and it still haunts me to this day.

thanks to the lowlife ex, my daughter married/divorced,, who lied so much , that he managed to get a casa worker and other court people to believe his lies, till we fought back , and lawyers are never cheap, and we won in the end, once the judge started sorting things out,
but I will carry a hate for that casa person for the rest of my life for what I went through(gun person, motorcycle person =lowlife,, according to the court, for while) and it was not even my divorce, anyway,

a SS marlin 44,
a marlin 357 custom take down,
several ruger stainless blackhawks in 44 and 357
among other generic toys that people buy and sell, anyway,

then to top things off, those I sold off too,we had a verbal* agreement to sell back ,
well one died, and his kid took off with the marlin 44, and have never seen him since,
the one with the custom take down, denies he ever bought it, don't know what your talking about,

the blackhawks, the dude went he would sell them back, for double what I sold them to him, ,
funny how you find out how crooked your quote friends can be,

*and shows just how little an americans word means now days,

I had no choice but to sell all weapons that weren't family connected when I purchased my grandmother's 7 acres. Missed most dearly is a Winchester top eject Trapper carbine .45 LC. It served as a wonderful complement to my Colt SAA New Frontier, popping at rabbits in eastern Oregon. Trappers have more than doubled in value since I owned it. Nuts.

For me I did not sold any of the guns I have .I did give one shotgun to my brother that is a pump . because he only had his single shot.and I had 3 pumps .So I let him have one of the 3 that I choose that he could get. Other then that I do not give up any one I have .Because of the same reason that some posted on here wish they did not sold any of the ones they had.

ive got a few I wish I had back.
1 610 3"
2 24 4"
3 sti Trojan in 9mm
4 3 different m1carbines
5 ruger red label 20 guage
6 browning side by side grade II 20 guage
7 rem 700 mountain rifle 280
8 a pro carry cdp Kimber
9 ruger ultra light 250 sav
10 ruger international 250 sav
I could probably go on and make a list of 50. Some were sold when I got divorced and had to come up with money but most were sold because at the time I was into something different and just traded because id use the gun I traded for more.

Dang, I'd take that 20g Red Label off your hands in a heartbeat. I keep an eye out for one but I've never seen one in a gun rack at the lgs's I stop buy

After working in the firearms section of a sporting goods store that went out of business, I will not sell/get rid of mine. Because of all of the conversations that started with "I used to have one but I got rid of it. I wish I never got rid of it".

Colt Lightweight Commander, 45 acp, pre-70 series. It was the most accurate 45 auto I had ever owned or fired. I bought it new in 1968 but by 1970 was needing cash to get married. Sold it to a friend who later got into trouble with it and it was lost for ever. It took me over 40 years but recently I replaced it with another one identical to it. Still have the wife.
