I decided to try some Lee 175 cast boolits from my 30-06 today. I've done a few plinkers with Unique in the past but today I decided to put on some speed. I loaded these up to what should be about 2400fps, with IMR 4350, and shot a few in the side yard to see if they leaded, they did not but I got a great puff of smoke with each shot.
The boolits are gas checked and tumble lubed with ALOX and JPW, do y'all think it is the tumble lube or the powder, or both, causing the smoke?

I would expect that powder and your chamber pressure make for partial burn and smoke.
However, all I worry about is the target and condition of the barrel...

Imr 4320 and H or Imr 4895?

4350 is a tad too slow for what you're doing (I think).

Negative. It's the best way I've found to get 24-2700 fps with accuracy in the '06 using conventional lube and boolits. I'd use better lube, though, never personally had any luck at all with tumble lube above pistol velocities, and the liquid Alox either is smokey or makes powder smoke worse.

I enjoy some great results in my .303 Brits shooting a 220gr over 41gr H4350 for 2000fps and a 177gr over 47gr H4350 for 2400fps.

Ditto on changing out the lube. Lars has several, Speed Green is easy to make, and pan lubing is fine for just starting and doing a few. If you get into doing this with rifles I expect you will be buying a lube sizer or two. New or eBay - I got both of mine off eBay before the crazyness began but there are still deals available if you are patient and self controlled.

Thanks everybody.:)

Thanks Gear, you gave me the big answer. The smoke had me worried, I'm really good at breaking things.

Agree and agree.

IMR4350 is one of my basic rifle reloading staples (along with IMR4895, H335 and W748) and I use them for my "serious" loads with any type of boolit--lead or copper.

Agree about tumble-lubing high velocity boolits. I've done okay with it, but I've done a lot better with beeswax-based lubes.

That's a lot of barrel for that boolit to whip down and high velocities and I want lube on it the whole way.

HI,
I have been thinking of using IMR 4350 IN MY 7MM/06 with the 168gr. gc Lyman bullet.
Have had moderate success with 51 grs. WC860 & old Lyman alox lube. But do not know my velocity as don't own a chroney .
The IMR 4350 would be much more expensive though.

Yep, you're going to use a bit more of it, but I've gotten some outstanding groups with both 185 grain boolits as well as 200 grain boolits using IMR4350. The velocities are about 300fps less than what I get with the comparable jacketed boolits, but the groups are almost within an inch. Not quite MOA at 100 meters, but dang close.

Yep, gotta love the 748, too, unless you try to take a round developed in the Texas Summer and touch it off in really, really cold weather, you might need a ramrod to extract the case. My solution: Stay in Texas, and don't hunt when it's 20 degrees. The powder is ideal for too many things not to use, plus it meters like water.

While we're on the subject of slow powders with cast boolits (Lyman Reloading Data peope, veiwer discretion advised!), wanna guess what else works pretty good in the .30-06? H1000. That's right, pack it tight with filler, lots of case neck tension and crimp, use a magnum primer, a 200+ grain boolit, and enjoy some fine, fast, lower-recoil shooting! Makes a fireball at night that you wouldn't believe.

I have been using AA4530 with a paper patched 311289 in my 06 for years. Best powder I have found for it.
