Mine is 308-313 followed by 35 in rifles. 44 followed by or tied with 356-358 in handguns. Like Bret the 22rf more than the rest. Gianni.

For cast bullets:

Rifle, .30, 8mm, 6.5 and 44 for the 44-40. Also 45 and 50 round balls for the muzzle loaders..45 is percussion and 50 is flintlock.

Handgun, .45 for ACP and LC, .38, 9mm, 44 and 36 round balls for the cap and ball revolvers. (those cap and ball revolvers are amazingly accurate and extremely easy to hit well with in fast shooting.)

............I'd hazard that the 30 cal is far and away the most cast for rifle caliber. With the 30-'06 and the 30-30 probably being in the top 10 reloaded cartridges (rifle) in this country for a LOOOOONG time. Add in the odd 30-40 here and there .................

To stick my neck out further, possibly the most used mould around would then become the Lyman 311291. If that is the case, I wonder why Lyman hasn't discontinued it yet :-)?

For rifles, simply check the prograss of the GatorCheck group buy. For pistols, I'd guess the 38/357 over the .45.

What was surprising to me was the vast numbers of handgun molds over rifle molds sold. That is because it has always been simplier for me to shoot cast in a rifle accurately which means no leading, than in a handgun. Add to the fact that copper handgun bullets have always been available with descent prices. especially, if you stayed away from the brand names. Where rifle bullets were always more expensive even if the weights were less than the materials in a handgun bullet. But so be it.

If you want to get an idea what is most popular, then pull out some old catalogs and see what diameter and weights the factory molds are / were sold in. It will jump out at you which was/is the most popular.

Buckshot nailed it--if Lyman or Hornady stops making it, you KNOW it must be popular. With that in mind, the 243 cops the prize as the most loaded cast boolit caliber. Right?

Kidding aside, I imagine the 30 calibers are the most commonly cast rifle chamberings--likely because the 30's ARE the most popular calibers out there--at least in North America. It would be difficult to develop a BETTER cast boolit rifle caliber than the 30-30, for certain--and difficult to find more intrinsically accurate and flexible calibers than the 30-06 and 308. A caveat is needed for j-words heavier than 180 grains.......the 30-06 does better work than the 308 with those critters, but with 150's and 165's it's a dead heat. I believe it was Whelen that said--"The 30-06 is never a mistake". I wonder how few of us here DON'T own a 30-06 or 308?

I would bet a small amount that the 30 cal rifle and the 38/357 handgun are the most popular cast bullet rounds
