My son and I are watching Sgt. York with Gary Cooper. I noticed at the turkey shoot they show a guy pouring balls for his BP rifle. Pretty neat! He is actually pouring them too. Not just movie magic....

Alvin York stated that he had never shot a breech-loading rifle until he was drafted into the Army. He came from a remote area, where folks were quite poor; if something still worked, or could be made to work for little or no money, then it remained in service. The real Alvin York had a lot of input in the making of the film, because he flat forbade them to make it, otherwise!

Cooper, Stewart, and Wayne: Great actors that will always be remembered in the work they did so well.

I've been hoping to see Sgt. York played again as it hasn't been on for some time locally.

Cpl Alvin York (Wasnt pinned SGT untill later) Was in my battalion 1/504 PIR. There is a monument for him in front of th B co. AO. One of the 5 members of the 82nd to recieve the Medal of Honor, and probably the most deserving.

..............Gary Cooper himself was quite an appreciator and lover of firearms and had quite a few of his own. An interview done with his daughter after his death said that if "If they couldn't find dad immediately around, they knew to go check in his gun room and there'd he be". Quite a few actors of his era were 'gun people' and hunters. Clark Gable hunted in the local San Bernardino Nat'l Forest.

AIRC Coop grew up in Big Timber, MT. He probably was a good judge of wind.

I did notice, however, they had the ramrods extending past the muzzle.
The only time I did that, I made the ramrod shorter.
They were different men back then.

I loved the line in the movie where the scuttlebut was going through the men while marching. I cannot remember exactly but it went something like 1st guy" York captured 235 men by himself" second guy "oh ya howed he do that?"1st guy " He surrounded them!".I love the old movies and Coops are some of the best!

Great movie, have to watch it once at least every two years. Regret that I did not make it a point to go visit Sgt. York when he was alive. Did get to shake hands, and talk briefly with Charlton Heston when I bought his book at an NRA convention. He was old, and some what bent over, but the voice was Moses!

82nd Airborne,

What does PIR mean as a unit designator? (1/504 PIR)

Is it "Parachute/Paratrooper Infantry Regiment?

Or did it mean something else?

Did the US have paratroopers in WWI?

I dont know, I never went airborne.

Yah, how many of (us) can name how many of the "gentlemen" in hollywood now???
Ahhh, never mind, I won't start the list.
Except to say that Rosie and Ellen are no "gentlemen" .....;)

Parachute Infantry Regiment.
No Paratroopers didnt jump into combat untill WW2. Notice there is no airborne tab above SGT Yorks patch, that didnt come along untill later.

I first heard the PIR in Band of Brothers.

My father enlisted for that kind of service, so they put him in the Army Air Corps.

He asked to fight the Japs, so they sent him to Europe.

I think when those WW II contrary assignment personnel came home after the war, they went to work for the IRS.

LOL that makes sense. They called me on the day after Christmas saying I was going to A-stan. 4 days later I was on a plane to A-stan. Another 4 days later I was on a CH-47 that got shot 8 times in baghdad. They told us it was a 90 day deployment. 15 months later I came home and met my 6 month old daughter. I found out the wife was pregnant the day before I left.
They can never get anything right.

I always cut mine an inch or two longer than the barrel. Gives you something to hang onto with a tight patch.

Every time it's on I slow down or re-watch the turkey shoot sequence to get a good look at the rifles. It's no wonder that Noah Beery, Jr. didn't win the shoot--he's got an awful flinch.
