One 5 cav, all GC, no HP
Rick at lasc dot us
The following pic is from an RCBS iron 2 cav just to give those not familiar with the design something to look at. This really is a great bullet design, even my FA revolver will put these into 3-4 inches at 200m and pack quite the whollop doing it.

I've shot both the RCBS and the SAECO # 356, and I prefer the Saeco,it's a tad shorter which helps in wheel guns, the nose is bore riding , and the crimp groove is beveled.
IF the Redding/Saeco, "new & improved" would allow it I would copy a picture of the 356 and post it for compairson. BUT I can supply NOE with samples if needed
rockrat
11-08-2010, 08:00 PM
Wayne S, its up to everybody here, what they want. If they want to go with the Saeco design, so be it. Sounds like a good design.
cbrick
11-08-2010, 08:22 PM
I'll stick with the RCBS design. If there is enough interest for the SAECO design I'll consider that, possibly as another group buy. For right now we have begun a list of those that have committed to the RCBS design, would throw a wrench into the gears to switch things up now and start all over. :groner:

For anyone that hunts with a 35 caliber this really is a great bullet design and it's also a perfect candidate for those that wish to HP it. I use it in long range revolver competition and it is a very accurate bullet.
Both of my RCBS 2 cavs of this bullet throw WW at 212 Gr, one of these molds in HP version should be right near 200 Gr.

As a suggestion, a HP cavity design from Glen Fryxell that leaves plenty of bullet to punch through game even if the nose breaks off and yet enough cavity to open up. I dubbed it the Fryxell Profile Pin, don't know what Glen calls it.
Fryxell Profile Pin = HP cavity of .150" diameter at the mouth, cavity with 7 degree taper and extended .250" into the bullet with a rounded tip.
With this pin profile I would consider a second mold in two cavity Cramer style.
As a SWAG, the amount of cavity in the drawing would leave less than half the bullet weight or under 100 grains if the nose breaks off.
Just a little something for the grey matter to chew on.
Rick
Al:
I think the 0.200" major diameter pin is asking for trouble on your RG moulds !
It would make little difference to me on the single cavity style pin though since I can machine any profile
I need !

Well, since you asked me Al. I would like a little more meat around the hp opening, perhaps not as wide a mouth at the meplat, a stepdown and not quite so deep. I would like to see what cbrick is suggesting.

I'll go for an RG2 Fryxell HP pins and GC. Also would like it drilled for the digital thermometer probe please. Anything shorter than this will not feed in my 358 Win bolt actions. I really like something in the 225-250 gr weight for those rifles. They absolutely will not take the 180-190 gr weight bullets. FWIW, I don't think NOE makes cramer moulds. I think you would have to order either the RG2 or RG4 moulds. Funds sent 12/8/10

Not interested in another aluminum mold.
Seth, do you have an NOE aluminum mold? If you see one of these you may change your mind about aluminum molds.

Seth these are NOT Lee Aluminum molds. They are Aluminum but far better quality. But if it is the bullet design that is ok. But it is not the mold.

I know, I have several aluminum NOE molds, yes they are better than lee's but but at the end of the day they are still aluminum which I am not a huge fan of. After getting some brass molds over the past year or so though I like them so much that I am becoming reluctant to get anything else now unless I feel that I just absolutely need a particular design right away and can't get it in brass. Between steel and aluminum I prefer steel and I like brass better than either. In my opinion brass combines most of the best qualities of steel and aluminum as a mold material and looks gorgeous too as icing on the cake. This design is a fairly popular classic and who knows, perhaps it will be offered again in brass sometime. Swede did say that they would still do all brass group buys with an order of 15 or more.

I gave Al a PM about this, I think that only 5 are needed for a small group buy rerun, there are five of us here that want a brass mold.
Also have a question is the fryxel pin the only one being offered for RG molds?

Swede said this here: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=109536
We will be offering all brass group buys that will require our
minimum 15 orders to run.
So is it 15 or 5? Would a brass run still be included with the current aluminum run or would it go to the end of the line (to wait for tooling or something)?
rockrat:
I already sent payment for the brass mould ! Do you want me to start over on my order for a 1-cavity HP + 3 extra pins in aluminum?

My understanding is that since it requires a different cutting tool now we would need 15 orders to get this one in brass instead of just five. If the same tool could be used he would just run them the same way he has up to now, with brass or aluminum being optional on the same buy. Now each buy must specify whether it is going to be brass or aluminum.

Well Suo, it may be your lucky day. I am in for a 5 cav FP and a two cav HP. (both in aluminum)
Since I broke my knee three months ago money's been mighty tight. I really wanted that mold but if you'll take the 2 cav HP I'll scrounge the money for the 5 cav. I just can't make it for both right now, at least not and eat to.
At least this way Swede won't be stuck with an extra mold. Let me know and I'll contact Rockrat and Swede.

Rick, I hope you heal up as that is the most important thing, I feel kind of bad worrying over a brass mold when you have an injury. If yours was an RG2, I'll take your spot.
I am still trying to get clarification of the pin styles. I want the Fryxel pin style if there is an option.

To the best of my knowledge the Fryxell pin style is the only one being made for this bullet but Swede will have to answer that to be positive. That is the only pin style I was interseted in also and is what I thought I ordered.

I heated up the pot, smoked the mold and made my first pour. ONE out of the four had a wrinkle. Then went on to use up 10lbs of WW with no other defects, must have cast over 300 all dropping at about 209gr out of WW. All looked good execpt that first one and all dropped by just opening the mold but several did require a little bump. What a great mold to use and a cavity sure makes a pile in a hurry. Check the active group buy and group buy discussion threads for what is happening now, if you see something you like/need/want just add your name. Once it gets made you'll get it. I just got another incredible 5 cav from Swede yesterday, a work of art it is.
