hello all, I need some help for a load that I have not been able to find data for a 190 grain cast bullet. The bullet will be a ranch dog tlc 359-190gn bullet. May be or may not be gas checked. lubed with lee alox I will be shooting a 357 mag. Thompson contender 10” barrel. The powder I have is 2400, 231, unique and imr 4227. thanks

Start at 10 grains of 2400 and work up to 12 grains. That's all I will go up to myself using a 185 grain lead GC boolit. I find 12 grains of 2400/185 gr lead out of a GP100 357 mag works fine on deer. 11.5 or so is my sweet spot for accuracy out of that gun.

When working up a load for a boolit that isn't in the loading manuals, I use one of 3 methods.

The first is to use Wiljen's Reloading program. It is available FREE and has a bunch of loading data in it. You can download it from a link in the "Special Projects" forum.

Second method is to interpolate a load from a similar weight bullet in the loading manuals. For instance, in this case I'd look up loads for a 180 to 200 grain jacketed bullet and start with the lowest load listed for a 200 grain bullet or reduce the lowest listed load for a 180 by a grain or 2.

Lastly, when working up a load for a wildcat or a heavy for caliber boolit, I interpolate a load from the loading manuals by using a similar capacity case in a similar cartridge. For instance, when working up loads for my 35-30, I started with data for the 30-30 and 32 Special and used a reduced load for a similar shaped and weigh bullet.

Oh yeah...the Lee manual has gobs of info on lead boolits in the loading data that can help guide your efforts. I'd definitely suggest you get one.

Hope this puts you on the path to safely working up a load.

Scroll to the bottom of the page of the link above. The COL is limited in the above loads because the information is for the Marlin 1894C but with the Contender you should be able to work with longer COL's.

In my old Lyman 45th manual they list loads for the 195 grain #358430 which I have. They top out at 11 grains of 2400 with that bullet. 1018 fps from 5” barrel.

Listed accuracy load is 5.5 gains of Unique for 942fps. Which is also the Unique max charge. IMR 4227 starts at 9.5 grains with max of 12.2 gr for 1020 fps. No listing for WW231 although it should work.

IIRC the RD 190 is a 35 Rem rilfe bullet. That may use less case capacity than the pistol bullets. Sounds like that should be quite the hammer from a 10" barrel TC.

In the rcbs #12 manual it has some Silly Wet loads useing a 10 " contender ,but 200gr. TMJ bullets !

It`s in line with all that`s been stated here considering boolits get 1 gr. drop from bullets!!

It`s got 2400 startin at 11.0 grs. for 1243 fps. & topped out at 12.0gr. for 1336 fps !!

Again there using jacketed TMJ s

I have a mold that was reworked from 141Gr wadcutter, to a !95 Gr flat nose, and I've been running 10 Grains of 2400 in it, actually it was my first try with the boolit at 10 Gr of 2400, and it worked out well enough that I stayed with it. I use it in my Puma .357, and in my Security six.......................................steg
