I have a 308 with a bad throat. Am thinking of having it rebored to 358 win. Looking at the various shops that do this there is a choice of 3, 4, 5 or 6 grove barrels. Which would be the best or would there be that much difference? I do know the an even number is easier to measure. I have shot 2, 4 and 6 grove and they all shot well if I did my part.

A barrel change would probably be cheaper than a rebore. Reboring is expensive and very exacting. Find a gunsmith and ask lots of questions.

Ben just had one done a bit ago.
it is in 3 groove, and very accurate.
if he doesn't answer i'd p.m. him, and ask where he had it done.
measuring a re-bore shouldn't be too hard 358 is 358.

Reboring can be more cost effective than re-barreling. A rebore keeps the sights and stock while many re-barrels require a lot of additional work, including re-blue.

The only problem is there are few reboring shops and therefore they have a pretty captive audience. I know my rebore 30 years ago took about half a year. I DO plan on having the .308s I have rebored or re-barreled to .358 Winchester.

The last rebarrel I had done, from .375.284 Ackley to .358 WCF was last year and cost near $500 for a Douglass barrel.

thanks for the inputs. I guess the easy way out for me is to ream it to 30-06, but I already have 3. Just wanted something different.

Thanks

I have had very good luck with Clearwater Reboring. I had them do a couple for me, and quite a few for customers and everyone has been happy. I usually get them to do the rebore and then I finish the chamber. But they will do the whole job too if you like.

Greetings
Me... I would do a .375 rebore... a .375 with a .308 chamber would be one real different but effective thumper.
Jesse Reboring goes up to .410 and is an economic alternative to a new barrel....

I'm not sure that would work out. As it is, the .358 doesn't have a lot of shoulder left, and going to 375 would reduce it further.

JES reboring is only $230 IIRC, for three groove, an addt'l $20 if you want 4 or 5 groove. He does a good job. I think his turnaround time is fairly short. Call him and see

Guess I could add that you could go with a 375-284 possibly, but dies might be hard to get. Larger case dia than the 308, about .030" IIRC, so should be plenty of shoulder. I used to have one in 44-284, now there isn't much shoulder there. 265gr@2550fps

I would think the 375-08 would be workable.

a tapered case like the 375 win but rimless should be easy enough to do. [yeah iv'e though about it some].
i'd still go with the 358 win or 35 rem.

Wow< Ben, that is a great thread. I love Weatherby Vanguards. I have a .224 Weatherby Vanguard that I made from a .223 rifle. The only thing I have ever had in .358 was a Lone Eagle pistol, and it was alot of fun. I have always thought that I would prefer to have the .358over the .308 any day.

JES does .338 also, how about a 338 federal or 338-06

got a ss pac-nor barrel for 3 bucks and change
best mod I ever did
chambered all I had to do was set the shoulder back a bit for headspace and screw her on
best of luck the 358 is good medicine

It's amazing what that little .308 case can do! A .358 Winchester is dog-gone close to a .35 Whelen. Have you checked out the .338 Federal?..It's simply a .308 necked up to .338. I looked over the balistics of that rascal last night and was impressed!

225 grain bullet @ 2400-2500 fps does a great job of killin' what you're hittin'.

.338 federal is a very good cast cartridge. I like it alot. 4895 under a 250gr cast is magic in that little guy.

frankenfab :

My 358 that Jes did IS NOT for sale. I love it, it is my " GO TO " white tail deer rifle.

You guys won't go wrong with JES's re-bore work. He is top notch !

Ben - I understand your 358 is a 3 grove. Do you see any advantage to 3 grove over a 4 or 5 grove with cast boolits. Right now the 358 win appears to be the best option for me.

2 grooves shoot really well, I'd be intrested to see how a 3 groove compares.

Have Jes do it and that 3 groove will SHOOY cast. The most recent one is a 30-30 to 38-55 and it will one hole at 50 yards. Youo get thebarrel back screw it in and go shoot.
