View Full Version : .475 woes

I am having trouble finding a sizing die that will size bullets down enough for my FA 83 in .475 L.
The .476 RCBS die I have allows the sized bullet to spring back just enough to make it impossible to chamber.
I need a .475. I contacted Huntington and they don't make one.
Can anyone steer me to a source.
What do you guys with this gun do about this problem?

What size are your boolits as cast? My friend has no trouble with my .476 boolits in his Freedom. Have you slugged the throats? They might be too small.
The reason I like BFR's.

They are NOT too small, they are perfect. It's the bullets that are too big. If I had wanted loose tolerance in the chambers I would not have bought a Freedom Arms. .475 bullets from Cast Performance shoot great but I like to cast my own.

Marsh, try casting at a lower temperature and see if the boolits fit. I can't find a smaller size die and mine is also .476. If your throats are .4755, you might have to make a size die. If they are .475, they are too small.
What boolit do you cast?
Lee will make you a push through size die to any size you want. I think they cost $12.

Send a 0.460 die to Stillwell and have them open it up. If it's for a Lyman or RCBS sizer, they stock dies so you can just order it up. I got their info off of Mountain Molds website. http://www.sizingdie.com/

Thanks Babore. I had though of getting a .474 die and lapping it to .475 but no one stocks them either.
44man. I don't think a lower temp is the answer but I might try it. Thanks

IIRC the custom sized Lees run 25.00?? If it was more than a week ago I have trouble remembering anymore, I think.

I just talked to Mr. Stillwell and he is going to open up a .460 die for $39.00 encluding die.
No offence swheeler, but I wouldn't use a Lee product if it was free.

Hi Marsh
What bullets are you using? I have the exact revolver here as well and love the the wide flat point bullet you are showing in the picture. Thanks

Thats a 425 gr bullet in the picture. The one I am discussing is a 400gr. Much wider.

A 400 grain is much wider than a 425 grain? hmm interresting...however, what I am asking about is whether or not the bullets in the photograph are CAST or "store bought"?

Guess I should have asked a better question.

It's a company called Cast Performance Bullets. I picked them up from my gun store. They are in WY and I'm sure they have a web site I just don't know what it is.

They are one of the best designed boolits going and I model all of my handgun moulds after them. Most accurate boolits that I have found and they do a job on game.
