Gator checks are made with better quality control, and don't seem to be too hard to crimp smoothly. Usually, they are freshly made for a LARGE order, with no shelf time to allow the checks to harden. I have no idea how many Hornady checks are made per caliber per production run. Must be in the millions, and they would naturally sit on the manufacturers' or retailers' shelves for quite some time. ... felix

There has been some questions of changing the order once the final price is known. In order to get the final price we need a final count. If we do not close the GB we will not get the final count.

Example: We close the GB tonight and we reach a final count of 400k. Larry provides a price of $XX.XX per k and some may think "at that price I want more". So we reopen the GB and more are ordered. Over the course of the next couple of days (or weeks) we take in updated orders and in the meantime latecomers decide they want some. The order then goes to maybe say 750k total. We close the GB, notify Larry and he says "ok, with that order the price is now $XX.XX. So I post "we are over the top on this one, here is the new price". Then there will be more that say "at that price I'll up my order", so we reopen the GB again, (I am starting to sound like Forest Gump) then MORE latecomers come in over the course of the weeks following that price change. It would be a never ending cycle and a GB would never close. All I wanted to do was start a process where we cycle thru the calibers as quickly as possible then cycle thru them again until there is no need to do it anymore. The 323 GB went pretty good I think. Total time from when it started till when the GC's should arrive will be around ~6 weeks. This one may take a little longer because of the K count but I feel in the end everyone will be happy.

So keeping that in mind please review your orders and ask for what you want now. At midnight EST the 30 GATORCHECK GB will close. We will notify Larry and within a couple of days he will provide our final price. I will post that price and the cost per package for shipping / packaging.

Also keep in mind also there are more calibers to cycle thru. Save a little money for them. I think the .35 was next popular....

I it is closed. This one ran for about 2 weeks. In order for these to move as fast as possible we will run them for short periods, get them made and get them out to you guys. As soon as we get the price on these we will start collecting moneys for the 30 CAL and start a new caliber. We will cycle thru the calibers then start again. Be patient, it will come around again.

This year on the way to South Dakota I stopped at Hornady in Grand Island and took the factory tour. They will take as few as one(1) person on the tour. I went through alone with a young lady engineer as a guide.

The machine that makes the gas checks is a stamp press type machine that feeds a roll of gas check material in from a roll hanging behind the machine. The material is approximately four inches wide (at least on the spool that I saw) and every stamp of the machine takes five or six dime size punches out of the strip and ejects finished gas checks on the same pass!

Very impressive! the strip comes out of the machine on the other side full of holes and is chopped into small pieces to return to the manufacturer for more gas check material.

While I stood there and asked if Hornady was going to stop making gas checks the machine must have produced close to a thousand(1000) gas checks of what looked like 30's or 8MM.

The young lady and the gentleman feeding the machine said that Hornady may quit making some particular gas checks that were not selling but they had no plans to "quit" making gas checks.

Please note that there was only one machine! And they just change out the stamp dies to go from one check to the next.

Gator Checks, though I haven't used any yet and the 30 Cal order is my first purshase, must get his material from a similar source as Hornady. I would supect that the machinery to make Gator Checks is very similar to the machine in Grand Island.

Incidently, you should have seen the lead melt pot that they use to mix the core
lead for their bullet wire!
Must have held two tons of lead in a molten state.

This is the 30 CAL GATORCHECK GB UPDATE.

This GB is closed for orders. I just got the word and there is good news as well as bad.

BAD NEWS FIRST: In order to get the best price on metal Larry had to do a HUGE purchase. He has 2 machines but only 1 set of 30 cal dies and in order to take the least amount of time from his busy schedule as a doctor he will only make runs when he can run both machines at once. This is where the good news comes in.

GOOD NEWS: He has an outstanding order for 35 CALS which he will run at the same time. So I will start a thread tonight for the 35 CAL GATORCHECK GB.

BEST NEWS: Because he bought big on the metal order, even though the price of metal has gone up the price for both buys will be "Slightly under $20 per K".

Shipping will change for this buy and all buys from now on. Some of the 323 GB gascheck packages were damaged in shipment. I cannot assume responsibility of lost product due to some ape at the USPS tossing our packages hap-hazardly. So for the 30 CAL as well as all future buys I will use the stronger (and slightly more costly) USPS Flat Rate Box. This will increase the cost of shipping to $8.05 (I think) per package.

I will start collecting 30 Cal funds in the near future. In order to keep SWMBO happy and not have our personal funds "out there" while I wait for personal checks to clear, I will only except postal money orders from now on.

Just remember when packing for shipment, I strongly recommend two different boxes inside one another. If Felix hadn't done that there would have been 40 or 50K gaschecks between Arkansas and Tennessee. I will gladly, gladly pay extra for it.

Gator checks have far superior quality control over those of Hornady. However, if you can get the Hornady's on the cheap, by all means do so. Each and every one of them is going into the dirt anyway, so when you get down to it, none of these checks are worth a plug nickle. ... felix

If you are going to use the flat rate boxes, the P.O. also offers (free) a priority mail Tyvek envelope. It is approximately 15"x11.5" and is practically indestructible. If you put the zip-loc baggy full of gas checks into the Tyvek envelope, and then put that in the box, it's one more layer of protection with the only expense being the additional time for the extra step.

I used the flat rate envelope for the 323 GB. I placed the GC's in the zip-locks, wrapped them in the tyvek bags then sealed them in the flat rate envelope and then added priority tape around the top. The flat rate envelope is the part that partially fail during shipping on some. This is why I am going to the flat rate box. I think the thicker (layered) cardboard will hold up better. I will still use the tyvek around the ziplocks.
