I just finished a 336 Marlin for a customer. The gun started as a cheap birchwood carbine. We sent the barrel to JES Reboring and it came back perfect. The bore is 376 on the nose and the chamber is perfectly cut. The 3 groove barrel is deep cut rifling and it handles cast like a dream, the test group at 50 yards was under 1 1/2" offhand and I don't shoot that well. The rest oof the rifle was upgraded. The lawyer safety was erased and the triggger was taken down from 9 to 2 pounds crisp. The stock was replaced with a walnut stock with the old style curved bettplate and the old Marlin pistol grip. The fore stock was trimmed thin like the old ones and the sights were replaced with dovetailed front and rear buckhorn and blade like the original M93. All in all a dandy deer rifle just in time for deer season.

If anyone is considering getting a rifle rebored I can highly recommend JES they do top nootch work.

I have a JES 38/55 rebore and it will shoot about 5/8" at 50 yds. with my cast bullets.

Could you give a ball park figure for the reboring cost alone? I have a heavy 6.5-06 barrel that is shot out. It'd make a lovely 30'06 cast only barrel.

Oh krap! It's on an FN Mauser, it'd make an even nicer 375 H+H.......

$225 for a 3 groove rebore, $250 for a 4 or 5 groove

Thx, if the quality is good that doens't seem too bad considering the time and money saved inletting a stock for a different barrel.

Did you choose the 3 groove for a reason? I like the idea myself, lot's of support, like a 2 groove Springfield or Enfield. Are the other reasons you chose it? Any chance of a pic or 2?

I've got a Ruger #1b in 270 I bought 4 or 5 years ago. I didn't need another 270 at the time but it was a screaming deal on a brand new 1b. I figured to use it for a re-barreling project someday. That project never got off the ground, largely because I was having a hard time coming up with a new rifle cartridge that I just had to have.

I think I might have found one.

You won't regret it. You know a 35 whelen will load up to 375 power levels and down to 357 magnum or less, kind of an all round rifle.

I have a 35 Whelen and a 375 Whelen and for our game I prefer the 375 though both are very good.
We have a custom design boolit for each caliber. The 35 is a 270gn and the 375 about a 360gn. I can get 2400 fps from the 35 with more than acceptable hunting accuracy and a smidgen over 2200 fps from the 375. Both are superb for our large size game.
Last year my son shot a 50" class bull moose with the 35. One shot with the 270gn at 2400 fps absolutely flattened that bull in his tracks. Even so as I said my preference is for the 375 Whelen though that may be more of personal preference than logic.
I have some projects going on and hope to soon send a 1917 Enfield to Jes for a three groove 375. I have already purchased the reamer but it is for the 375 Scovill. The 375 scovill is to the 375 Whelen what the 35 Brown Whelen is to the standard 35 Whelen.
If it turns out well I hope to put together a couple for our shop.
I have had Jes do one barrel for me and it turned out very well. It was a 45/70 on a Siamese Mauser that he bored to 50 cal. I supplied the reamer and Jes did the chambering to 50 AK. Very nice job!

I had Jesse Ocumpah rebore a marlin 336W to .375 Winchester for me earlier this year. He had the rifle back to me in less than a week and did a fantastic job on it. I highly recommend his work.

Hope this helps.
