View Full Version : 4 cavity companion mould to the 45 Colt "Ruger Only"
Matt_G
10-13-2010, 05:44 PM
Miha has agreed to do a four cavity solid version of the "Ruger Only" 45 Colt design as specified in post 9 of this thread (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=54702).
This will be a brass mould, just like his four cav solid he made of the 45-270-SAA.
Confirmed price is $105.00 including shipping.
We need 15 people to make this a go.
I want to thank Heavy lead for coming up with this brillant idea in post #188 of the above linked thread.
I'm 99% sure that Miha can do either a PB or GC mould just like we've specified for the 2 cavity cramer HP mould.
I do need to confirm this though. (I can't imagine why he wouldn't be able to do this.)
Heavy lead, as you can see I took the liberty of signing you up since this is all your fault!! [smilie=l:

Thanks Matt LOL, I can be a PITA hehe.
Put me down for one in plain base and one in gas check form. Especially since it's on me.
I will only do one of the hollow point moulds, but will post it up over there.
Thanks for doing this, it is going to be a great shooter, I can already feel the recoil of this big dawg.
Another plug for these, I've got one of Miha's 270saa 4 cavities, it is simply wonderfull, really I think any other mould maker would be charging at least $150 for these, at least. It is simply the finest I have and expect these to be the same. This design has good shooter written all over it.

Jerry, I will have to ask Miha if he can mix PB and GC in the same mould.
I know he can't do it with the cramer HP moulds due to pin height differences.
Not sure on a solid though. Stay tuned.

any idea when this mould would be ready to go? i need a new mould for my old model vaquero.
Matt_G
11-22-2010, 02:52 PM
Can't answer that yet JT.
We only have 13 moulds on the list so far and we need a minimum of 15 to make this one a go.
I do know that Mihec is getting ready to do a couple of other buys right now, including the hollow point mould of this same design. (The one that inspired this one)
I would say even if we had 25 or 30 signed up, it would probably be after Christmas, at the earliest, before this one became a reality.
That's strictly speculation on my part though...

Well guys it looks like i will bring up the rear with number 15 to make this a go. I'm not sure yet if i want a GC or non gas check design. but at 1200 fps i don't think one would be needed. any way i hope this puts a smile on some of your faces as the ball is now rolling ;). what pushed me over the edge is that thins looks just like the buffalo bore 325gr LBT-LFN. o and what size are these being made to .454? i honed my throats out to .453 so .454 gives me a seal in the throat and a good seal in the bore.

Welcome to Cast Boolit madness Plinker Jim. :drinks:
Our very own 45 2.1 is the designer of this boolit, both this solid and the original HP mould buy are based on his drawing. Mihec tells me that drawing puts this boolit at .454 out of the mould.

Ok folks, I have a couple of things to go over here.
I got a reply from Miha today. He states that will not cut GC and PB cavities in the same mould unless there is substantial interest in that.
Right now it looks like we only have two or three that would like that option.
I doubt he would consider that substantial.
The second thing is very important!!
Everyone who is signed up and has their name in red font on page one need to either post their camouflaged e-mail addresses in this thread or you can PM them to me.
Miha would like me to gather these so he doesn't have to open a separate order page for this mould. In other words, we are going to work this just like Dale53 has been doing for all the Miha moulds he has run.
I should have done this from the beginning but I didn't. :groner:
If you are signed up for the Ruger Only HP mould, I am going to do the same thing there so please post it there as well or tell me in the PM that you are on both lists.
Thanks fellas.

Reason for the delay. (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showpost.php?p=1109926&postcount=462)
Looks like we will have to wait till March at least.
Will this bullet work in a FA 454 Casull using 454 brass? How about a lever action Rossi model 92 454 Casull? I've had trouble with long nosed bullets feeding from the magazine in my Rossi 44 magnum. Anyone?

While I don't have a FA, or a 92 in 454, I can almost guarantee the answer is no. I know for sure it won't fit in either my Ruger SRH in .454 brass, or my BFR, just too long a nose.
This is designed for one purpose a Ruger .45 Colt heavy load, you may be able to run it crimped ahead of the crimp groove, but not in it.
Might be a fine boolit for the .460 Smith though.

It's done zac0419. Sorry to see you go.
Just one thought for you.
While you can cast solids with the HP mould (good ones) it can be a PITA because the pins when flipped protrude below the mould blocks. If you are a ladle caster then that isn't a big deal; however, if you use a bottom pour pot with a mould guide like I do, that is a problem.
Hence the demand for 4 cavity solid moulds.

Maybe next time Matt. Makes sense what you're saying. Truth is, I work most of the year overseas, I am just acquiring toys for when I come home. Two years from now the wife isn't going to say "here's a couple of thousand dollars, go buy some guns and reloading gear" but if it gets spread over 2-3 years..... No problem.
Plus when I do come home, I won't want to wait months for a group buy to close.
Thanks again.

Yes, you can still get in on this group buy. Mihec has not started machining them yet.
Diameter is .454
No pins are available. This is a four cavity solid mould.
The 2 cavity cramer style group buy has already completed.
As of March 23, Mihec said in that thread that he still had some moulds left over, both PB and GC. If you want a 2 cavity cramer style hollow point mould with all the pins, I would send him a PM ASAP. He might still have some.
Here is a link to that thread:

Do you still want in on this buy Micky?
If so, I need your e-mail address.
I am in for a gas check version.

Well folks, I have heard from Mihec and have good news and bad news.
The good news is that he got his brass in and is rough machining mould blocks for this buy and I assume other buys as well. [smilie=w:
The bad news is that if you aren't on this list it's now too late because:
This Group Buy is Closed!

Guess what was in my mailbox yesterday...
Yep, this mould and as usual, it's a beauty.
Haven't cast with it yet so I can't answer your question about how large they drop JT, but the hollow point version is dropping at .4545 for me. This one is cut with the same tooling.
MiHec, once again, Thank You!!
It is a pleasure doing business with you. Your craftsmanship is second to no one's! :drinks:

I THINK mine is at the Post Office.
I took a short nap Saturday afternoon, my wife was in the kitchen and watched the mail man drive up, put something in the box and continue on his merry way. When I went to the box later there was a "We tried to deliver, signature required" notice in it! I guess since it was Saturday he did not want to burn a calorie getting out of vehicle, walking 20 feet and knocking on the door. "Tried to Deliver" my left big toe!!!!!!!!
Could not get there today, planning to in the morning, still trying to decide how big of COMPLAINT i should file/make.

I have a question since I have not run into this before the mold half's are sticking
together what is the best way to solve this. I do not want to @#$ this mold up this is ny 5th of his molds and my first problem I admit I am spoiled with these molds as I am new to casting but they make me look good and the results are wonderful.

Have you tried lubing the alignment pins with the supplied lube?

Just take some fine sandpaper and "clean" woman side of alignment pins.
Sometimes there is some dirt from hardening process.

I have cast with mine and loaded it up lol. thy don't drop as easy as a boolit with a tapered or round lube groove but the boolit is worth it. mine dropped at around 330gr and right at .4545. here is a pic

I had a chance to cast with my plain base tonight, very, very nice, drops at 325 lubed and sized to .454, drops at .456 and very very crisp and well defined grooves, corners and such. Rear band is a little wider than the 2 cavity cramer, also nose is slightly longer.
Can't wait to let these set a couple weeks and shoot them up. Already have a pretty good 2400 load worked up for them.

Just curious; did you use those cases in 45 Redhawk? Seems to me that little ring just above rim was caused by extractor.
BTW what is crimp-to-nose length?
Thanks!
