What are your longest and shortest shots on game with a ML? First of all I'm not reccomending long shots on game here. I'm just asking this for fun.
If somebody is a very good shot and familiar with their ML, I don't see any problem. My longest was about 200 yards on a 125lb. dressed weight buck. I hit him behind the shoulder and he ran about 30 yards. My shortest was about 20 feet on a doe. She was almost right under my stand. She dropped right there.

My longest was about 200 yards but... it was with my inline. My shortest was 10 yards with a 58 cal rb. Unless I can count my squirells which may have been about 7 yards with my 40 flint, now that was a long shot :)

90 yards on a deer, stright down on a deer, 8 to 10 feet. Closest miss was when the barrel hit the deer and knocked me down as the deer ran in to me on the trail on a deer drive. I took a little harrasment on that one.

My longest was with a borrowed cva hawken, 80 or so yards and with the perspective that I had (uphill) I thought the deer was larger, but I had to cover the deer up with the barrel but was right on.
The shortest was 15 yards with an in line. BOOM thud.

My longest was with my Zouave .58 at 33 yards. I hunt river bottoms.
My shortest was the same rifle at 2.5 yards ... the 85 grain charge of 2F set the fur on fire. I was in a brush blind in my camo / no scent and a doe came walking right past.

Longest = 280yd. Savage MLII shooting 47 gr. 4759 under a 250 gr sst in a Harvester sabot lit off by a CCI 209 viewed with a Pentax 3-9 X 40 scope. Big Eastern Shore Lamma sized doe, about 125 lber.

Closest = Rabbit at 3' with a 28 ga Dixie kit ML shotgun I built in 1965. She kinda rough but goes bang. That was back when we even had Dupont bp.

Longest: ~100 yards on a 180 lb 8-point whitetail using my inline and 370gr maxiballs

Shortest: ~25 feet! Medium Whitetail using my .45 Hawken and 255 grain Maxi-Hunter bullets from natural ground blind (I was sitting behind a large downed tree)

Both deer ran less than 100 feet.

Nothing real long but I once got a nice fat little forkhorn at about 10 feet with a C&B 36. I missed a nice doe and got out of the tree without reloading the rifle when I heard the buck coming. I had the pistol and took it out. I was on one side of a big oak and when he came around the tree I shot him in the chest dead on. Surprisingly he did not go all that far before I found him. Not much of a trail though.

Impressive. I'm surprised a .36 pistol would drop a deer fast. That's not much more power than a .22LR.

Longest shot on a deer is 125 yds out in a feild with the TC Renagade hunter , 100 gr 2F and a Maxi

Shortest on a deer was 3-4 yds on a doe
She walked past my stand along the creek
125 gr of loose 777 , 310 Lee 44 Boolit cast in a sabot
The Boolit proformed a lobomoty in a split second

Closest on any game
Was 2-3 feet on a tree rat with the 36 cal CVA , Patched RB and 20 gr of 3F
It decided to check me out as I sat under a big oak tree against a smaller tree
As it came down the oak tree
I was laughing waiting to see just how close it would come

Actually the ball went length wise through the torso and stopped on the back part of the rib cage. Some things seem like the thing to do at the time.

Do porcupines count? about 5 feet with 58 Kodiak Round Ball and 110 grs. FFG. when smoke cleared it was done well done. Five point buck at 42 yds same load ribs looked like he was hit with a Buick. Though I got both lungs he ran up a steep hill about 80 yds. I did not bother to reload as it is a double barrel when I got up hill he was couched like a cat ready to pounce facing me but quite dead still startled me when I think about it he was going to fight?

Shortest was about 20 yds in Marias River bottom with my .50 Hawken Flinter, full stock. That RD went right through chest.

Longest (on a balloon) Sort of a fun turkey shoot to break a balloon at 200 yd. Everyone using scoped cartridge rifles but I chose my .54 Green River Lehman Trade rifle open sights.
1st round we all missed ( shooting off hand, no rest no slings ) I asked a guy to spot for me with his scope. Knowing Id need miss on first I held just under balloon to get idea of drop.

2nd Round , still all missed. I held over balloon, doubling the height of balloon from ground. Surprisingly he called my shot just over as it hit the burm.

3rd shoot, ( I always shot last in string so as to have time to reload and tease the other guys). They were now worried! this guy with a smoke pole was about zeroed in on the Balloon ! But sadly, the Guy before me (spotting for me) found the target.

I did go ahead and shoot at the point I had figured for the 3rd shot. He watched and said Id been pretty close on that one!

I'm not a sniper, I am a hunter and have no use for long range hunting shots. My shortest with ML was about 12 yds on an elk and about 125 yds on a deer. I did the 125 yd shot with 24 year old eyes, I woudn't do it now. I like the 40-75 yard shots with a ML. Hunt close, shoot straight, shoot once.

Blammer, that's actually really cool. You're consistent if nothing else. Woods hunter, I presume?

LOL I bet that was good for a laugh at your expense!

I've never felt the need for a bayonet on a ML until I read that.

My first (and only) ML kill was on a big fat doe this past Saturday - last day of ML season in Western NC and only day I got to go. 17yards. Stainless 50 cal H&R Sidekick shooting a cast (what else) 44 cal 240gr SWC (Lee tumble lube) from soft lead in a sabot sleeve with 90 grains of 777. It shoots tight at 80 yards, but didn't need nearly that. Yes, full pass through - double lung. Dang deer ran 50 yards.

As soon as I shot I sat down and was pumped up on my first ML kill - less than 30 sec later a 4 point ran down & stood right where the doe was at when I shot her.

New ML hunting rule for me: Reload first - think about it second - duh-huh.

yes, I'm a woods hunter for sure. Have to be around here. :)

Obx, great shooting and good deal on the deer! Yea, the first thing I do after I shoot my muzzyloader is to relaod after the first shot, right away! I could only hope a second would walk up in shooting distance after I got my first one. Lesson learned huh! :)

Where were you hunting?

Up in Yancey County. My brother had a guy ask him to come do something about all the deer eating his garden down - thank god he knew he needed some help.

"great shooting" - thanks, I think, I don't think I would have even needed sights on it - there is one spot that I think I might have a 50 yard shot. It was the first deer I've seen while holding a ML (I've had it 4 years).

Longest, maybe 90 yds. with a .50 PRB. Shortest, about 25 feet with an original 1861 Springfield w/ Minie ball- God, what a splattery mess it made!
